values - Alexander: The First Statement of Conservative Principles (PatriotPost.us)

"The Constitution, which at any time exists 'till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole People, is sacredly obligatory upon all." --George Washington
It took the election of a "community organizer" and ideological Socialist "professor" Barack Hussein Obama1 to launch a popular resurgence of interest in constitutional Rule of Law2 and the First Principles2 upon which our nation was founded.

And not a moment too soon.

Over the last two years, the ranks of politically active Patriots have swelled through conservative recruiting channels such as the Tea Party movement, whose growth has been entirely from the grassroots, despite the best (or worst?) efforts of some Beltway Republican establishment types to co-opt and put their brand upon the movement. Happily, Patriots have shown remarkable resilience against those golden-tongued powers of persuasion.

I, for one, welcome every American to the front lines in defense of our Constitution, but I also know that there will be many efforts to assign these Patriots into one political camp or the other.

One of the strengths of the Tea Party movement, its lack of central organization, can also be one of its greatest weaknesses. If the movement fails to unite ideologically behind the restoration of constitutional integrity and the Rule of Law, it risks devolving into a plethora of special interest constituencies which will be easily defeated or have no more power than the para-political organizations that vie for their sentiments.

As Benjamin Franklin said famously when signing the Declaration of Independence, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately."

And we derive great strength and unity in forming this front to defend our Constitution as the primary objective of the growing Patriot movement. I know from our nation's history, and from personal experience, that the only guiding authority that Patriots need is the plain language of the Constitution itself.

Back in 1996, a small group of Patriots deeply devoted to our Constitution, which we had pledged "to support and defend3," endeavored to challenge the Leftmedia's stranglehold on public opinion, particularly as it pertained to the role of government and promotion of Leftist policies.

To provide sustenance for those endeavoring to restore our Constitution's rightful standing as the Supreme Rule of Law of the United States, we established The Federalist, an online grassroots journal providing constitutionally conservative analysis of news, policy and opinion, with the express mission of "advocating Essential Liberty, the restoration of constitutional limits on government and the judiciary, and the promotion of free enterprise, national defense and traditional American values."

Our objective was, and remains, "to provide Patriots across our nation with a touchstone of First Principles."
Demand for The Federalist grew rapidly, to put it mildly. A few years later, we adopted the name The Patriot Post4 in keeping with the growing constituency we serve.

Now, I certainly do not suggest that we were the only folks back in '96 advocating for the restoration of constitutional Rule of Law. We took our inspiration from, and owe our success to, President Ronald Reagan5 and his Patriot team, many of whom were our earliest promoters and supporters. They sparked the flame to revitalize our Constitution's legal standing some two decades earlier, at the juncture of our nation's bicentennial.

We also owe a great debt to conservative protagonists such as National Review founder William F. Buckley Jr., and the Heritage Foundation's Edwin J. Feulner, both of whom provided meaningful guidance and assistance to get us under way.

Of course, I'd be remiss if I failed also to credit Albert Arnold Gore, who "took the initiative in creating the Internet" for us, and then galvanized those of us interested in national sovereignty in opposition to his utopian scheme to socialize the world economy, ostensibly to thwart "global warming."

I believe the most important factor in our success has been our steadfast commitment to the Rule of Law, the supremacy of our national Constitution in all matters pertaining to the role and authority of our central government, and our analysis of the same.

We have endeavored to keep our eye on the prize, and we've thus avoided being co-opted by any political party or organization.  That will be the challenge for the independent Tea Party Patriots and other conservative movements -- to keep their eyes firmly affixed on the task of restoring our Constitution and its prescription for Rule of Law, and to avoid the risk of being swallowed up by large, centralized poli-wonks.

Last week, my friend Ed Feulner, and many other colleagues, released "The Mount Vernon Statement6," a document similar in substance to the "Sharon Statement7" released in 1960 by a group of conservative intellectuals including Bill Buckley, M. Stanton Evans and Annette Kirk (widow of influential American conservative Russell Kirk).

Feulner and his staff at the Heritage Foundation have been uniformly resolute in their support for constitutional Rule of Law.

Ten years ago, I met with key staff members of the Heritage Foundation and encouraged them to adopt the practice of posting, in the introductory abstract of their papers, the specific constitutional authority for every policy position they advocate. Two years ago, Heritage launched their massive First Principles initiative, with the objective of asserting constitutional authority as the centerpiece of their mission.

While I applaud the entire Heritage team for their First Principles endeavor, I note that some of the principal signatories of the Mount Vernon Statement, though "conservative" by label, do not meet The Patriot standard of reliance upon the plain language of our Constitution, nor are many of those signatories representative of the "grassroots" movement they seek to unify around this statement.

With that in mind, I reiterate that any real movement to restore the integrity of our Constitution must be bottom-up, not top-down. Patriots need only subscribe to one mission statement, the first statement of conservative principles, our Constitution.

The GOP establishment squandered its opportunity to reassert First Principles when it held majorities under George W. Bush, and the party will have to demonstrate an authentic commitment to those principles if it is to gain the trust of a single American Patriot.

Real constitutional reform will come about only when Patriots across the nation demand the restoration of Essential Liberty8 as "endowed by their Creator," and they widely articulate the difference between Rule of Law and rule of men.
If you have taken an oath to support and defend our Constitution, I invite you to revisit that venerable document9 and ask you to reaffirm your oath10.
If you have not affirmed that commitment, I invite you to gain a full understanding of our Constitution9 and then take your oath11 -- and abide by it to your last breath, just as our Founding Fathers mutually pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor.

In the words of George Washington, "Let it simply be asked where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation deserts the oaths...?"

o'scamcare - maybe forced by Dems 'nuclear option' of only 51 votes!

From: ConservativeActionAlerts  Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2010

Dear Defender of our Great Country,

I've continually prayed for America . . . that we would never have to face a day like we are facing as a nation.

Just this morning, Mr. Obama offered a new healthcare reform detailed proposal on the official White House website that the insurance coverage would cost approx. $950 Billion over ten years...$950,000,000,000,00!!   This is totally unacceptable for me and my family to afford!

Before Obama was elected, I KNEW of Barack Obama's political voting record and socialistic agenda.   Based on my principles and values, I knew I had to oppose President Obama! I've been ridiculed, persecuted and called a traitor---for being black American who dares to be against the policies of Barack Obama.   Even as a Tea Party speaker and grassroots movement supporter in Nashville just a couple of weeks ago, the mainstream media chose not to cover me because my very presence contradicted the lies they have propagated against the Tea Party Movement. It was "too hot for their liberal hands to handle."

BUT---my greatest concerns are playing out. Mr. Obama is trying to trick the American people, and it is despicable.  The American people have opposed it in overwhelming numbers at every turn, but like some sort of totalitarian dictator, he is pushing it down out throats.

He is behaving more like Hugo Chavez than an American President.   THE PEOPLE ARE TOO STUPID TO KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR US.   MR. OBAMA WILL FORCE UPON US WHAT WE DO NOT WANT BECAUSE HE IS THE MESSIANIC LEADER WHO KNOWS BEST.   HE IS PLANNING TO ABUSE A SENATE PROCEDURE CALLED RECONCILIATION WHICH IS INTENDED ONLY FOR BUDGET MATTERS, NOT NEW LEGISLATION.   Now, it will only require 51 votes for passage!!

Here's the dishonest trick Obama will use: He will "attach" the healthcare bill to a budget bill as a "reconciliation" which will only require a simple majority to pass!   IT IS THE MOST DECEPTIVE, PARTISAN and FRAUDULENT ACTIONS IN AMERICAN LEGISLATIVE HISTORY, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT THEY WILL TAKE OVER 1/6 OF THE AMERICAN ECONOMY.   THIS IS AN UNPRECEDENTED ACT OF DISRESPECT TO YOU AS A CITIZEN AND A TAXPAYER.   IT VIOLATES THE VERY SPIRIT OF OUR CONSTITUTION AND REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNMENT.

Let me explain what the socialistic leadership has planned for you.   This is from inside sources.

  • The Democratic plan to socialize healthcare starts with the House of Representatives passing the Senate OBAMACARE Bill (H.R. 3962) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will not allow any changes or amendments.
  • Conniving Nancy Pelosi and deceitful Harry Reid have secretly  ( Yes, this is all behind closed doors, with no Republicans present!! ) decided that modifications to the Senate bill will be made to satisfy particular liberal House members; but only after the Senate Bill is passed and signed into law by Barack Obama!
You read that correctly: under the disguise of "reconciliation" Mr. Obama has directed that the new Socialized Healthcare Bill should be attached to a budget bill.   That way, it needs only 51 votes to pass.   This eliminates any possibility of filibuster either by Republicans or Democrats from more conservative districts!   That's correct: Obama is shoving his socialist agenda for healthcare right down our throats.

His Mussolini pose, with his chin jutting high into the air, may reveal more about the man than any of us wants to admit! The deception from our Commander-in-Chief is frightfully alarming!   And you must beware!   I say that with deep respect, because I faithfully served in the United States Marines, where it was instilled within us to obey the Commander-in-Chief.   Now, as Americans, we are facing the greatest mockery that we have ever faced.   Our Administration and our leadership both in the House and the Senate are trying to pass OBAMACARE WITH STEALTH AND DECEPTION against the will of over TWO-THIRDS of the American people. They have either forgotten the meaning of representative democracy or they just don't care! Ultimate authority and power is in the hands of the people, not a few legislative despots. They need a stark reminder that we are ruled by majority vote.

Until November, we need to let them hear our fury over the way they are treating the American people I am a Harvard Law School graduate, like Obama.   I know the sense of superiority these elites have toward the average American - the masses.   They value elite entitlement and distain representative democracy.    Only my faith in God allowed me to come through that institution with my common sense and Judeo-Christian appreciation for our country in tact.   Obama on the other hand thinks our constitution is "flawed" because it doesn't allow the government to dispense "redistributive justice."   Therefore, his Administration and Congress are no longer abiding by the Constitution or the will of the majority!

You and I MUST make sure these Congressmen are NOT re-elected if we want to pass on to the next generation the greatest nation the world has ever known!  ! YOU and I must STOP OBAMACARE RIGHT NOW!! You thought they needed 60 votes to stop the filibuster?   So did I!

But this devious administration has hatched a political trick ...that should have every American furious.   They have consciously set out to deceive the American people on an all-important subject that affects every one of us - healthcare! What is happening is catastrophic!  Quite frankly, Mr. Obama is LYING about reconciling with the Republicans on healthcare.

"How can my vote, fax or donation make a difference?" It ABSOLUTELY CAN AND WILL! This is an election year.   Already, each Congressman has read the polls and knows that most Americans oppose OBAMACARE!   Now, with your fax and financial investment they will see that their feet are being held to the fire on their vote.  Their political posturing and political jargon will be history.  Their vote is being watched and calculated by Conservative, patriotic Americans, namely you, me and hopefully millions of others like us. We will not let them get away with anything.

Liberal Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and San Francisco Socialist Nancy Pelosi, with the total blessing of Barack Obama, are right now engaged in the most un-democratic backroom, secret deal to ever happen on Capitol Hill! Without ANY true reconciliation or compromise among political parties, they are driving OBAMACARE like a stake through the heart of our economy and our freedom. They are trying to kill the future of our country The back-room "deal" is already finalized that Harry Reid and the Senate Democratic caucus will make "fixes" to the Senate bill AFTER President Obama signs it into law.   Did you read that right?   AFTER!!

Reid will provide Nancy Pelosi a document signed by 52 Democratic senators indicating they will pass the major changes, or "fixes," certain House Democrats are demanding.   These fixes will be agreed upon by the Senate only after Mr.Obama signs the Senate bill into law and the ink of his signature is dry. We must mobilize to fax every United States Congressman! Whatever it takes, we must do something to STOP SOCIALIZED OBAMACARE from being stuffed down our throats. YOU and your family are at risk. YOU and your business are at risk.   YOU and your paycheck are at risk.   Your health is at risk.  Our country is at risk.   In short, the very character and core of our beloved and great United States is at stake! You, the American people, had effectively killed this legislation.   These three culprits are trying to bring this bloodsucking monster back to life!   We must kill it again, once and for all!

This so-called "reconciliation"---rather, "ATTACHMENT" to a budget bill so only a simple majority is needed, is a highly deceptive and partisan means to defraud you as a citizen and a taxpayer. Some Democratic Congressmen are at political risk.   Conservatives and grassroots organizations, such as the Tea Party Movement, and concerned citizens turning out at town hall meetings, have made a difference.   BUT THIS IS THE CRUCIAL MOMENT. WE MUST GO ALL NOW TO STOP OBAMACARE.   NOW IS THE TIME FOR YOU TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

VOID of their filibuster-proof majority of 60 votes by Massachusetts Senator Brown's victory, liberal Democratic leaders are considering the partisan budget tactic because it would only oblige them to assemble a simple majority of 51 votes for passage, with Vice-President Joe Biden casting the determining vote! If all Republicans reject reconciliation, TEN Democratic defections would STOP OBAMACARE!

Please help S.T.A.N.D. to target those vulnerable Democrats! Remember the costly and socialistic "public option" part that was taken out of the bill earlier? WELL, IT'S BACK!! Lord, help us! Being coy to every public question, Harry Reid's first choice was to avoid reconciliation, but he has now admitted, "I am not ruling it out! All options are on the table!" (Of course not, he is handcrafting this "reconciliation"!!!) Reid's office on Friday communicated, "If a decision is made to use reconciliation to advance healthcare, Senator Reid will work with the White House, the House, and members of his caucus in an effort to craft a PUBLIC OPTION that can overcome procedural obstacles and secure enough votes."

In other words, he is willing to make a backroom secret deal and use arcane procedures and budget bill attachments that only require a simple majority...a violation of his duty to the Constitution and the American people. Minority Senate Leader, Mitch McConnell replied to this devastating tactic: "Using reconciliation would be an acknowledgment that there is bipartisan OPPOSITION to their bill, another in a series of backroom deals, and the clearest signal yet that they've decided to completely ignore the American people."

This "nuclear option" of attaching this bill to a budget bill is an outright denial of any due process. And it is frightening to think that Barack Obama disguised his true intentions behind a health care summit this Thursday. On the other hand, he has always tried to disguise his true radical intentions, and he has indeed fooled many Americans, but the people are waking up. This heinous act is a slap in the face to any clear-thinking voter! The only way to STOP THIS SOCIALIST EXPLOITATION is to refuse Nancy Pelosi the support of moderate Democrats in the House who are at risk politically and afraid that they too could be victims of a public outcry like the one which elected Republican Scott Brown U. S. Senator in Massachusetts to the seat once held by Ted Kennedy. Remember, the last healthcare vote in the House of Representatives only passed by a couple of votes. So, there is a good chance that YOUR faxes can make a critical difference.

Your faxes can make an indelible impression on swing Democrats who are worried about their re-election. FAX AND GIVE TODAY! Tomorrow---sorry to say---may be too late for America! My children and my grandchildren cannot afford to pay his stated $950,000,000,000.00 over the next ten years. Please---STOP OBAMACARE NOW!

E. W. Jackson - raising the standard of what Americans expect from their government!

Because I truly care for our great country,  , E. W. Jackson, Founder of S.T.A.N.D.

P. S. Scheming Democratic leadership in Congress will use this underhanded plan to bring OBAMACARE back from the precipice of death and make socialized health care the law of our great land.   Our forefathers would roll over in their graves to think such a divisive tactic would be used to take over 1/6 of the American economy!   It is despicable!

CLICK HERE to Fax every Congressman. Let them know exactly how you feel about OBAMACARE socialized medicine! Then, as we "make waves" of action among Congressmen and in their districts, please GIVE your largest donation possible to STAND. We are activating voters to oppose OBAMACARE, especially among African-American voters! No one else is doing that! This week extremely crucial to our country's destiny...GIVE TODAY! THIS IS IT. THE LAST STAND NEEDED TO KILL THIS MONTRSOITY OMNCE AND FOR ALL. IF WE DO NOT STAND NOW, WE WILL SOON HAVE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN OUR DOCTORS OFFICES, DECIDING OUR HEALTHC ARE AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE.PLEASE GIVE NOW AND GIVE GENEROUSLY!

What You Need to Know About Social Security

by Laura Cohn
Monday, February 22, 2010

1. Patience Pays Off
The longer you wait, the bigger the check. You can start collecting Social Security as early as age 62. If you do, however, you could suffer a reduction in benefits of 25% or more for the rest of your life. And if you continue to work, you could run up against the earnings cap, which in 2010 dings you $1 in benefits for every $2 you earn over $14,160. But wait until your normal retirement age of 66 (for those born between 1943 and 1954; older for those born later) to collect and you can earn as much as you want without trimming your benefits. Plus, that larger first check becomes the basis for future cost-of-living adjustments.

2. Marriage Has Its Perks
Couples have the most flexibility. Say your husband's lifetime earnings are much higher than yours. You're ready to start collecting benefits based on his record, but your husband is not ready to retire. The solution: Once he reaches his normal retirement age, he can file and suspend, meaning that you can collect your share while he waits to collect benefits until later, when they will be worth more.
If you have comparable incomes, however, there's a little-known strategy that can boost your total household benefits. Say your wife wants to stop working but you don't. She can claim benefits based on her record. If you are at least 66, you can claim spousal benefits only on her record and put off collecting your own Social Security until age 70, when you qualify for the maximum payout.

3. But You Can Collect if You Decouple
You may be able to collect on your former spouse's benefits, as long as you were married for at least ten years and are 62 or older. (If you remarry, however, you can't collect based on your first spouse's record -- unless your second trip to the altar ends in divorce, annulment or death.) If your ex-spouse dies, you're entitled to a monthly survivor benefit (even if he or she remarried) equal to 100% of what your ex received during his or her lifetime -- assuming it's higher than your benefit. At that point, however, your benefit would disappear because you can't collect two checks.

4. Bide Your Time. Get a Bonus
If you wait until age 70 you can collect even more, thanks to the delayed-retirement credit, which is worth 8% a year. Say your normal retirement age is 66 and at that age you'd collect $1,000 a month. If you wait until you're a septuagenarian, your check would grow to $1,320 -- a full 32% more. If you retired four years early, at 62, your monthly payment would be just $750. With average life expectancies at an all-time high, chances are good you'll be around to enjoy the higher benefits.

5. Ask for a Do-Over
If you started collecting Social Security and wish you had waited in order to get a higher benefit, you can press the reset button. Honest. You'll need to pay back what you've received -- which could be $100,000 or more -- but the government won't charge you interest. And the taxes you paid? You can request a refund. Essentially, this strategy allows you to take an interest-free loan from the government. Once you repay, Uncle Sam will restart your benefits at the new, higher rate. But it pays to stay in good health because it could take eight to ten years to recoup your investment.

values - Remembering The Alamo by Chuck Baldwin, February 23, 2010

Remembering The Alamo By Chuck Baldwin, February 23, 2010

February 23 marks the anniversary of the beginning of the battle of the Alamo back in 1836.  For more than 13 days, 186 brave and determined patriots withstood Santa Anna's seasoned army of over 4,000 troops.  To a man, the defenders of that mission fort knew they would never leave those ramparts alive.  They had several opportunities to leave and live.  Yet, they chose to fight and die. How foolish they must look to this generation of spoiled Americans.

It is difficult to recall that stouthearted men such as Davy Crockett (a nationally known frontiersman and former congressman), Will Travis (only 23 years old with a little baby at home), and Jim Bowie (a wealthy landowner with properties on both sides of the Rio Grande) really existed.  These were real men with real dreams and real desires.  Real blood flowed through their veins.  They loved their families and enjoyed life as much as any of us do.  There was something different about them, however.  They  possessed a commitment to liberty that transcended personal safety and comfort.

Liberty is an easy word to say, but it is a hard word to live up to.  Freedom has little to do with financial gain or personal pleasure.  Accompanying Freedom is her constant and unattractive companion, Responsibility.  Neither is she an only child.  Patriotism and Morality are her sisters.  They are inseparable: destroy one and all will die.

Early in the siege, Travis wrote these words to the people of Texas: "Fellow Citizens & Compatriots: I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. . . . The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise the garrison are to be put to the sword . . . I have answered the demand with a cannon shot & our flag still waves proudly from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat. . . . VICTORY OR DEATH!  P.S. The Lord is on our side. . . ."

As you read those words, remember that Travis and the others did not have the A.C.L.U., P.E.T.A., People for the un-American Way, and the National Education Association telling them how intolerant and narrow-minded their notions of honor and patriotism were.  A hostile media did not constantly castigate them as a bunch of wild-eyed extremists.  As schoolchildren, they were not taught that their forefathers were nothing more than racist jerks.

The brave men at the Alamo labored under the belief that America (and Texas) really was "the land of the free and the home of the brave."  They believed God was on their side and that the freedom of future generations depended on their courage and resolve.  They further believed their posterity would remember their sacrifice as an act of love and devotion. It all looks pale now.

By today's standards, the gallant men of the Alamo appear rather foolish.  After all, they had no chance of winning--none.  However, the call for pragmatism and practicality was never sounded. Instead, they answered the clarion call, "Victory or death!"

Please try to remember the heroes of the Alamo as you watch our gutless political and religious leaders surrender to globalism, corporatism, and political correctness.  Try to recall the time in this country when ordinary men and women had the courage of their convictions and were willing to sacrifice their lives for freedom and independence.

One thing is certain: those courageous champions at the Alamo did not die for a political party or for some "lesser of two evils" mantra.  They fought and died for a principle, and that principle was liberty and independence.  So did the men at Lexington and Concord.  That is our heritage.

Today, however, our national leaders are in the process of turning America over to the very forces that the Alamo defenders gave their lives resisting.   On second thought, do they look foolish, or do we?

Beyond that, how much longer do we have before it will become necessary for freedom-loving states such as Texas (and maybe Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Vermont, or South Carolina) to declare their independence one more time?  An argument could be made that Washington, D.C., is considerably more brutish and tyrannical than old Santa Anna ever was.  I'm not so sure that it isn't already time to again hoist the "Don't Tread On Me" flags, shout "Remember The Alamo," and renew the faith and courage of William Travis and Patrick Henry.

Accordingly, I strongly recommend that readers study the current series of columns that my son, Tim Baldwin, is writing regarding the historical, constitutional, and legal support for State secession.  These columns are brilliantly written and thoroughly documented.  No honest person could read these columns and not recognize the right of states to secede.  There will be a total of 12 parts to Tim's thesis. See them at:  http://newswithviews.com/Timothy/baldwinA.htm

P.S. We have just been told that our printer found an additional 36 copies of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS from the last printing.  If you don't want to wait until June (date of the next full printing) to receive a copy of THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS, we currently have these 36 copies available.  And, yes, the letter of Will Travis - written from the Alamo -- to the people of Texas is included in THE FREEDOM DOCUMENTS.  To order now, go here:  http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com/products.html

privacy - Virginia bill to protect Virginians from attempts to implant microchips in their bodies against their will.

Human microchips seen by some in Virginia House as device of antichrist

By Fredrick Kunkle and Rosalind S. Helderman
Washington Post
Staff Writer
Wednesday, February 10, 2010; B01

RICHMOND, FEB. 9 -- The House of Delegates is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a bill that would protect Virginians from attempts by employers or insurance companies to implant microchips in their bodies against their will.  It might also save humanity from the antichrist, some supporters
think.

Del. Mark L. Cole (R-Fredericksburg), the bill's sponsor, said that privacy issues are the chief concern behind his attempt to criminalize the involuntary implantation of microchips. But he also said he shared concerns that the devices could someday be used as the "mark of the beast" described in the Book of Revelation.  "My understanding -- I'm not a theologian -- but there's a prophecy in the Bible that says you'll have to receive a mark, or you can neither buy nor sell things in end times," Cole said. "Some people think these computer chips might be that mark."

Cole said that the growing use of microchips could allow employers, insurers or the government to track people against their will and that implanting a foreign object into a human being could also have adverse health effects.  "I just think you should have the right to control your own body," Cole said.

The religious overtones have cast the debate into a realm that has made even some supporters uneasy and caused opponents to mock the bill for legislating the apocalypse.  Del. Robert H. Brink (D-Arlington) said on the House floor that he did not find many voters demanding microchip legislation when he was campaigning last fall: "I didn't hear anything about the danger of asteroids striking the Earth, about the threat posed by giant alligators in our cities' sewer systems or about the menace of forced implantation of microchips in human beings."

Microchips, which use radio frequency identification, have been used in pets to identify and track them. Proponents uggest that such chips could be invaluable in making people's medical records portable and secure and in helping to identify and find missing children. Others have urged they be used with Alzheimer's disease patients.  But the growing use of microchips has collided with the Book of Revelation. The biblical passage in question is in Chapter 13 and describes the rise of a satanic figure known as "the Beast": "He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."

David Neff, editor of the magazine Christianity Today, said that some fundamentalist Christians believe that bar codes and implanted microchips could be used by a totalitarian government to control commerce -- a sign of the coming end of the world.  "This is part of a larger attempt to constantly read current history in the light of the symbolic language of the Book of Revelation," he said.  That book has been sifted for clues to contemporary events almost since the ink on the parchment dried, and Caesar, Nero, Napoleon, Hitler and some of history's other controversial one-namers have been identified as possible antichrists. Now, it's President Obama's turn, as tea partyers and others warn of federal intrusions into the debate over health-care reform.  Now, the book is giving new life to worries about microchips.

Such fears seemed futuristic until veterinarians began implanting microchips in pets in the 1990s and especially after a Delray Beach, Fla.-based company, VeriChip, introduced an implantable FDA-approved chip in 2001 that could store a person's medical records.  A voluntary initiative by the federal government to control disease outbreaks by tracking livestock using microchips and 15-digit numbers has also whipped up fears of government intrusion in some farming communities.

"I think it's kind of a lot of things. It's everything from civil liberties to privacy rights to the mark of the beast," said Katherine Albrecht, a nationally syndicated radio host who co-wrote "Spychips," a book about corporations' use of microchips and other potentially invasive technologies.'

Several states, including Wisconsin, have approved bans such as the one Virginia is proposing, and the Georgia Senate passed a similar bill last week.  Virginia Del. Charles W. Carrico Sr. (R-Grayson) said that he would probably back the bill because his rural community is leery of government intrusions. But Carrico said he also gives credence to biblical teachings on the importance of being vigilant against an antichrist.  "As a Christian, I believe there is a time that Christ will come back to receive his people home, and that's just the basis of what the Bible shows, and that there will be an antichrist that arises during that time, and those that remain, to buy or sell anything, they will have to take on this mark," Carrico said. "I don't know that it's a microchip."

As the measure moved through House committees, Del. David B. Albo (R-Fairfax) said that lawmakers wrestled with whether the military or military contractors should be able to require that employees receive implants as a condition of employment.  "This whole end-of-days thing I just heard about through rumors," Albo said. "The fact that some people who support it are a little wacky doesn't make it a bad idea."  Others dismissed the legislation, calling it a sideshow as lawmakers grapple with a huge budget gap.  "We've got a $4 billion hole, and we're spending time on microchips," said Del. Albert C. Pollard Jr. (D-Northumberland). "At least when Nero fiddled, they got good music."

Cole...said he shared  concerns that the devices could someday be used as the "mark of  the beast" described in the Book of  Revelation.

COMMENTARY:

Liquidating the Empire
By Patrick J. Buchanan
In their Mount Vernon declaration of principles, conservatives called the Constitution their guiding star. But did not the author of that constitution, James Madison, warn us that wars are the death of republics? Ron Paul's victory at CPAC may be a sign the prodigal sons of the right are casting off the heresy of neoconservatism and coming home to first principles.
