lot of flack over the years regarding the practice of baptizing deceased individuals who were never Mormon. A fascinating new article from Max Perry Mueller in Slate breaks down some of the misconceptions about this practice, while also confirming some of its more controversial details.

But the most interesting bit of news to emerge here is that not only was American Founding Father and third president of the United States President Thomas Jefferson given a posthumous Mormon baptism, but he was also sealed to former house servant and lover Sally Hemmings. The Mormon ritual of sealing is meant to connect spouses and their families in the afterlife.
"The Mormon People" author Matt Bowman explains to Slate, "Mormons believe that heaven consists of a great network of families bound together through a particular sacramental ritual called sealing. Parents are sealed to children, spouses to each other, ancestors to descendants."
Mormons did not perform the baptism of the dead on Hemmings until April 1991—13 years after the church lifted its membership ban on African-Americans.
A number of famous individuals, and millions of ordinary people, have been given posthumous Mormon baptisms without the permission of their surviving relatives. Some of the more famous recipients include Elvis Presley, Adolf Hitler, Anne Frank and Pope John Paul II. Shortly after Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, his own deceased mother, Ann Dunham, received a Mormon baptism, according to Business Insider. However, the church did denounce Dunham's baptism, as it was performed by an individual not directly connected to her family line. The church as stipulated that only direct descendants may perform the baptism.
Mueller notes that this ritual does not technically make the deceased person a Mormon. Rather, it gives Hemmings and other deceased individuals, "the opportunity to obtain salvation." In Mormon belief, those who receive the posthumous baptism are then allowed to choose whether they accept the invitation. Mueller also goes into further detail about the politics surrounding the process of proxy baptisms and how the LDS church has attempted to crack down on individuals performing this ritual on people not directly connected to their own family's ancestry.

While walking down the street one day a corrupt senator (that may be redundant) is tragically hit by a car and dies.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.
"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you."
"No problem, just let me in," says the senator.
"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity."
"Really? I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.
"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."
And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course.
In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.
Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.
They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.
Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good time dancing and telling jokes.
They are all having such a good time that before the senator realizes it, it is time to go.
Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises.
The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him, "Now it's time to visit heaven."
So, 24 hours passed with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.
"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity."
The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers, "Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell."
So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.
He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls to the ground.
The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders.
"I don't understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"
The devil smiles at him and says,"Yesterday we were campaigning.
Today, you voted."

This isn't the first time the president and first lady have shown themselves to be out of touch with, and even a little insensitive to, the lives of average Americans.
From the family's multiple vacations in expensive locations to the extravagant dinners at Washington D.C.'s most exclusive restaurants; from the president's ubiquitous golf games to the first lady's high-priced fashion preferences (no, I don't consider J. Crew to be an everyman clothing label) and her need to employ a high-priced makeup artist among her entourage (the future queen of England does her own makeup, for goodness sake!), the Obamas have spared no expense when it comes to their own personal pleasure and entertainment.
The Obama's latest example broke earlier this week (then later un-broke as media types dutifully accept White House marching orders to scrub all stories on the matter) that 13-year-old Malia Obama and twelve of her friends trotted off to Mexico on their very own teenage spring-break vacation. The shocking thing: There are no parents on this trip.
To quote a 12-year-old neighbor: "How super awesome is that!?"
But parental supervision isn't needed on Malia's vacation because 25 Secret Service agents have accompanied the young girls to Mexico. So, that averages out to two agents per child. Huh, where have I heard that two-to-one ratio before?
Thinking . . . thinking . . .
Oh yeah, it has a family unit ring to it, as in normally 13-year-olds are accompanied by two other people - their mothers and fathers - on vacations (especially vacations to Mexican beach resorts that cater to spring-breakers.) The White House must have realized this when they settled on attaching two responsible (gun-wielding, highly trained) adults to each child - at taxpayer expense, of course. But more confusing to the average American is why in the world is 13-year-old Malia getting her very own vacation - complete with staff?
To say I'm appalled by this strange lapse in the Obama's formerly pretty spotless parenting record (save for that unfortunate incident when the first lady talked about her daughters' heft on national television), is an understatement.
I'm not at all shocked that the Obamas fail to see their daughter's spring-break vacation as a massive waste of taxpayer dollars, Secret Service resources, and military personnel. But I am shocked that they don't recognize Malia's time-out in Mexico as a fundamentally inappropriate activity for a 13-year-old, and a terrible message to send American families about what young teens are supposed to expect and the role of parents in looking after them.

High school students in Miami decided to ransack the local Walgreens on the way to a Trayvon Martin rally. The students left the store when the vice principal ordered them out.

North Miami Beach police said surveillance video shows dozens of high school students demonstrating in the Trayvon Martin case Friday ransacking and shoplifting from a Walgreens store.
The incident occurred during a walkout from North Miami Beach Senior High School in support of Martin, 17, who was fatally shot in Sanford. Protesters have been calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman, 28, who has not been charged because he claimed self-defense in the shooting, according to police.
Minutes after walking out of their school Friday at about 11 a.m., a large group of students walked through the streets of North Miami Beach. Along the way, they stopped at a Walgreens at 163rd Street and 15th Avenue.
Surveillance video shows dozens of teenagers running through the store. Police said about 50 to 60 students stormed in, ransacking the shelves, before the school's vice principal ordered everyone outside.
North Miami Beach police said students stole about $1,100 worth of merchandise and damaged some items, including a DVD player, in the store.
Some of the students dropped their IDs on the way out of the store, police said, so investigators have an idea of who was inside.

On Friday, I sent you a copy of my letter to Comcast Chairmain Brian Roberts on the complete lack of civility and balance on MSNBC.
That letter marked the beginning of a campaign that we've launched to compel NBC News to clean up their act with regard to the nightly barrage of hate that makes up their cable lineup.
I released the letter below today. It details Al Sharpton's history of hate speech and the completely hypocritical act of providing a man like Sharpton a platform to accuse conservatives of incivility.

Dear Mr. Griffin,
Last week, in my open letter to you I called for Ed Schultz's termination. I also called for you to resign as President of MSNBC because you hired Ed Schultz. Today, I have yet another reason you should step down - one which some might argue is even more compelling than Schultz. His name is Al Sharpton.
I have already provided you with ample, documented evidence of Schultz's repeated, over the top attacks against women, the elderly, tea party activists, and anyone else who happened to be in his crosshairs.
I have also made known the fact that your network is the mouthpiece for the George Soros funded Media Matters, a radical group whose mission is to slander everyone who disagrees with its fringe leftwing ideology.
I also pointed out these assaults by MSNBC have nothing to do with what Rush Limbaugh said about Sandra Fluke, and everything to do with censoring prominent voices on the right. Instead of reporting on the woeful state of our economy and the catastrophic debt crisis, MSNBC goes after Limbaugh with entirely unmerited and phony moral righteousness.
The Media Research Center repeatedly discussed, promoted, and circulated these letters in a variety of very public venues last week.
As the President of MSNBC, you are personally responsible for hiring and promoting Ed Schultz.
You have had every opportunity to respond and take responsibility for this situation. Yet, neither you, nor Ed Schultz, nor the Chairman and CEO of Comcast have responded.
Therefore, I now offer you (and everyone reading this) another reason to take responsibility - Al Sharpton.
Al Sharpton - a man who made a name for himself by orchestrating the Tawana Brawley hoax that destroyed innocent lives and also incited race riots that led to the death of an innocent child.
In addition, some of his greatest hits include:
- Al Sharpton spewing the n-word over and over and over (Listen here)

You fired Pat Buchanan because you didn't think his book "should be a part of the national diaogue, much less the dialogue on MSNBC." But you retain Sharpton.
By giving a platform to Al Sharpton on the one hand, and by promoting his campaign to suppress free speech on the other, you're engaging in mind-boggling hypocrisy - hypocrisy unbecoming of a "news" network executive.
While your network continues to attack Limbaugh, you continue to employ Al Sharpton and Ed Schultz. Take responsibility and clean house. If you don't, we will continue to further expose MSNBC for what it is - a platform for racist, misogynistic, homophobic hate mongers. And we will continue to ratchet up public pressure for your resignation.
I have already contacted Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast (your boss and MSNBC's parent company). On March 14, we sent him a letter calling on him to demand Schultz's termination. As I noted in my letter, we intend to take this message directly to the shareholders of Comcast and its board of directors.

President Barack Obama's 2013 budget plan would raise taxes for 27 percent of U.S. households, far more than the administration estimates, according to a nonpartisan study.
The study comes from the Tax Policy Center, a research group in Washington that analyzes proposals from presidential candidates in both parties.
Obama focuses the tax increases in his 2013 budget on corporations and the top 2 percent of individual taxpayers. The result in the center's study stems from the fact that taxpayers in all income brackets own parts of corporations.
"There are enough corporate tax increases in the president's plan to have a measurable impact on the distribution," said Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the center.
Most of the additional tax burden imposed by Obama's budget plan would fall upon the highest-earning taxpayers.
Compared with current tax policy, under Obama's budget proposal 98.4 percent of people earning more than $1 million would see their taxes increase next year by an average of $184,504.
In contrast, 31.6 percent of U.S. households earning between $50,000 and $75,000 a year would see an average tax increase of $92. In that same income group, 16.8 percent of households would have a tax cut averaging $382.
The report reflects a modeling assumption about corporate taxes, and the administration's budget doesn't raise taxes on any family making less than $250,000, said Amy Brundage, a White House spokeswoman.
"What it does do is close a series of wasteful and unaffordable corporate tax subsidies, which include, for example, ending the expensive tax subsidies for oil and gas production and incentives to companies to ship jobs overseas," she said in an e-mail.
