Kerry chose to berth the Isabel in Rhode Island to avoid paying $500,000 in Massachusetts taxes. As a senator, Kerry has voted to increase taxes more than 350 times.

News reports indicate that the Isabel may have already berthed in Massachusetts, triggering the avoided taxes and making Kerry a tax cheat. When asked if this was true, a haggard looking Kerry responded: "that depends on who owned it." The Isabel was constructed in New Zealand and is technically owned by Great Point LLC, a corporate special purpose vehicle controlled by Teresa Heinz Kerry to allow the Kerrys certain tax and liability benefits. During his doomed presidential campaign, Kerry criticized American companies for using subsidiaries for tax advantage. Kerry recently stated: "It repulsed me that while the average American plays by the rules and pays taxes, some of the biggest corporations avoid paying their fair share."

Noblesse Oblige: Obama's Dog Gets Own Plane on Vacation Trip

      The Morning Sentinel, a small paper from the state of Maine, has a travelogue story of the Obama's vacation in and about Maine today.  It has a very interesting little tidbit in it that should enrage every American.  It is something that really shows Barack Obama's arrogance and his obviously assumed air of noblesse oblige.

      Among the exciting details of the Obama's visit to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor is this tidbit:

Arriving in a small jet before the Obamas was the first dog, Bo, a Portuguese water dog given as a present by the late U.S. Sen Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.…

      As the rest of us toil on the unemployment line, as millions of Americans find their retirement accounts dwindling, their hours at work cut, and their pay scale trimmed, King Barack and Queen Michelle are flying their little doggie, Bo, on his own special jet airplane for his own little vacation adventure.

      Well, it must be nice to be able to afford to fly your doggie about the country whenever you feel like it.   It must be nice to hire people to act as your dog's escort.  It must be comforting to know that you have the power to arrange such luxury for a dog.  As America lurches toward depression our leader is wasting millions on constant vacationing — 16 vehicles were used to drive the Obama's around North Carolina — and affording his dog …his dog… his own special jet airplane.

      Air traffic at the small Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in Trenton was shut down for the presidential arrival.  A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter patrolled the air in anticipation of the first family's touchdown, and a pair of local fire and rescue trucks stood ready on an otherwise empty tarmac at the private air hangar.  The Obamas then traveled onto Mount Desert Island in a motorcade of at least 16 vehicles.  It was led by two Maine State Police cruisers and included five black Chevrolet Suburbans.

      And all this on OUR dime, folks.  We are paying for our monarch to fly his pets around the country on their own special jets, folks.

      Perhaps Barack Obama isn't like a king.  Perhaps he's more like an emperor?  An emperor like the fiddling Nero.

Frustrated at the Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration law, a Republican congressman introduced a bill demanding that the attorney general also take action against so-called "sanctuary cities," which discourage immigration enforcement.

Rep. Duncan Hunter's bill is the latest step as lawmakers seek to inject themselves into the debate and force their colleagues to take a stand on the contentious Arizona law. One of those moves failed Wednesday when Republicans tried, but failed, to have the Senate vote on blocking the government's lawsuit against Arizona.

Mr. Hunter's bill, for which he started soliciting co-sponsors Wednesday, would stop the Justice Department from pursuing its lawsuit against Arizona until Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. submits a plan to Congress outlining how he would bring sanctuary cities into compliance with federal law.

A majority of voters tell pollsters they back Arizona's law, and Mr. Hunter said the government overstepped its bounds by singling out a state he says is only trying to help federal authorities meet their responsibility to enforce the country's borders.

"The federal government is being inconsistent," said the lawmaker, whose district includes San Diego and other areas just north of the California-Mexico border. "They're saying we don't want a patchwork of laws, and that's why they're suing Arizona, but at the same time they allow sanctuary cities ... to passively impede federal law."

Tracy Schmaler, a spokeswoman for Mr. Holder, did not respond to a request seeking comment Wednesday. But in a statement to The Washington Times last week, Ms. Schmaler said the Arizona law and sanctuary ordinances are not the same.

"There is a big difference between a state or locality saying they are not going to use their resources to enforce a federal law, as so-called 'sanctuary cities' have done, and a state passing its own immigration policy that actively interferes with federal law," she said. "That's what Arizona did in this case."

In a subsequent e-mail, Ms. Schmaler said the DOJ would review new local ordinances to determine if they conflict with federal immigration law, which requires states and localities to cooperate with federal authorities on immigration laws. But she was silent on existing policies.

The Arizona law, which goes into effect July 29 unless a court blocks it, requires authorities to inquire about the legal status of any detained person about whom they have reasonable suspicion might be in the country illegally. The law as amended specifically prohibits using race or ethnicity as a reason for suspicion.

Arizona officials have said the federal government has failed in its responsibility to police the borders, and the state is experiencing a crime wave spurred by illegal immigration. They have said the new law is meant to fill in the gaps in enforcement.

Seven lawsuits have been filed against the state, with arguments ranging from a violation of federal prerogatives on immigration to accusations that it will inevitably result in racial profiling.

"The Arizona immigration law is one of the most recent and obvious examples of racial profiling. [The law] states that race or color should not be factors justifying an officer's 'reasonable suspicion' to demand a person's papers, but how else will an officer act on this vague definition of suspicion?" wrote Laura Murphy and Jasmine Elliott of the American Civil Liberties Union D.C. office in a blog post last week.

The hearing on the DOJ lawsuit begins Thursday at the U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

The Arizona law has become a dividing line in the debate over how to tackle illegal immigration. Convinced they have a winning issue, Republican campaigns have eagerly sought to pin down Democratic congressional candidates on where they stand, arguing voters should know whether members support Arizona or the Obama administration. More than 80 members of Congress have signed on to a legal briefing supporting Arizona.

Mr. Hunter's bill would stop the Justice Department from pursuing its lawsuit against Arizona until Mr. Holder submits a plan to Congress outlining how he would bring sanctuary cities into compliance with federal law.

Mr. Hunter acknowledged that his bill faces an uphill battle in the House, where Democrats hold a substantial majority. Asked about the proposal Wednesday, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declined to comment, noting the legislation had yet to be introduced.

On Wednesday, senators voted 55-43 on a parliamentary move that blocked Sen. Jim DeMint from raising the issue as part of a debate over extending unemployment insurance.

But the South Carolina Republican is likely to try again on upcoming bills.

"It makes no sense in a free country, in a democracy where we're built on the rule of law, for the federal government to try to intimidate the people of Arizona, who are only trying to protect themselves," Mr. DeMint said.

A 2007 report from the Justice Department's inspector general found 15 cities that don't regularly inform federal authorities when they arrest an illegal immigrant, and 10 cities that wouldn't regularly tell authorities when a known illegal immigrant was being released from custody, either of which could be viewed as shielding illegal immigrants from detection.

The IG report said two jurisdictions - Oregon, and the city and county of San Francisco - acknowledge themselves as sanctuaries. It also said many cities categorized as sanctuaries include language in their policies requiring local authorities to cooperate to the extent required by federal law.

Threats Against Obama Prompt Secret Task Force

Threats against President Obama have became so disturbing that a secret Presidential Threat Task Force has been created within the FBI to gather, track, and evaluate assassination threats that might be related to domestic or international terrorism.

The task force operates within the FBI's National Security Branch. It consists of 20 representatives from pertinent agencies, including agents from the FBI and Secret Service and operatives from the CIA, the NSA, and the Defense Department, as well as analysts.

The disclosure appears in a new chapter to the paperback edition of my book "In the President's Secret Service: Behind the Scenes With Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect," which hits bookstores Aug. 3.

The hardcover edition reported that threats against Obama rose by as much as 400 percent compared with when President Bush was in office. Although threats fluctuate, the level continues to be at high enough levels to call for the threat task force. Many of the threats are from racists who have no connection with politics.

At the same time, the Secret Service, which let party crashers into the White House in November, has been spinelessly acceding to requests of the Obama administration officials for Secret Service protection in instances where there are no threats against them.

As a result, 40 Obama administration officials and White House aides are under Secret Service protection, compared with 32 under George W. Bush. No one outside of the government has heard of most of these officials, but they have one thing in common: They enjoy being chauffeured free of charge by the Secret Service.

The expansion in protection has occurred while the Secret Service is jeopardizing the president's safety by cutting corners because of understaffing and a management culture that is indifferent to the potential risks, as detailed in the book.

The Secret Service's deficiencies led to the intrusion by Michaele and Tareq Salahi at the White House state dinner for Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. As it turned out, they weren't the only party crashers, as revealed in the Newsmax story "Secret Service Let Third Intruder into White House."

The Secret Service knew about the third intruder for weeks and had identified him, but mortified Secret Service officials failed to inform the House Homeland Security Committee, which was investigating the original breach at the White House.

After I asked the Secret Service for comment, I wrote a story for Newsmax.com revealing that a third intruder had crashed the state dinner. Having failed to respond to my request for comment, the Secret Service issued a statement within two hours confirming that "a third individual, who was not on the White House guest list, entered the state dinner."

The breach was a deliberate, conscious decision by uniformed officers to ignore the fact that the Salahis and Carlos Allen, the third intruder, were not on the guest list. Those decisions are an expected consequence of the agency's practice of cutting corners.

The corner-cutting includes:

• Not passing crowds through magnetometers, or shutting down the devices early, at presidential events.
  
• Cutting back on the size of counter-assault teams and bowing to demands of staff that the teams remain at a great distance from protectees.
  
• Not keeping up to date with the latest, most powerful firearms used by the FBI and the military.
  
• Not allowing agents time for regular firearms requalification or physical training. The Secret Service covers that up by asking agents to fill out their own test scores.

No doubt the uniformed officers who decided to wave the Salahis into the state dinner were aware of the corner-cutting and were overwhelmed by the workload. In part because the Secret Service refuses to demand funds for adequate staffing, the attrition rate is as high as 12 percent a year within the Uniformed Division alone. In addition, the agency bows to political pressure. When agents refused to drive friends of Dick Cheney's daughter Mary to restaurants, she got her detail leader removed. The fact that Secret Service management does not back personnel when they are just doing their jobs had to contribute to the uniformed officers' reluctance to turn away guests at the state dinner and face possible repercussions. "To this date, not one high-level person has been held accountable for these failures and corner cutting," a Secret Service official, who declined to be named, tells me. "Secretary Janet Napolitano has failed to hold this director accountable. He [Mark Sullivan] doesn't want to ruffle anyone's feathers. He doesn't want to ask for more money. He is more concerned about appeasing the administration." The official adds, "A large majority at headquarters has lost faith in him. Everybody's waiting for the day he leaves. This agency has some very talented people, and that is clearly lacking in the case of the director." Despite the breaches and corner-cutting, Obama has said he has complete confidence in the Secret Service, signaling that he sees no need for a change in management. Given the clear warning signs, that is just as reckless as Abraham Lincoln's and John F. Kennedy's disregard for security. Lincoln resisted efforts of his friends, the police, and the military to safeguard him. Finally, late in the Civil War, he agreed to allow four Washington police officers to act as his bodyguards. But on the night of his assassination, only one D.C. patrolman, John F. Parker, was guarding him. Instead of remaining on guard outside the president's box at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865, Parker went to a nearby saloon for a drink. As a result of Parker's negligence, just after 10 p.m., John Wilkes Booth made his way to Lincoln's box, sneaked in, and shot him in the back of the head. The president died the next morning. Kennedy told Secret Service agents he did not want them to ride on the small running boards at the rear of his limousine in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.   "If agents had been allowed on the rear running boards, they would have pushed the president down and jumped on him to protect him before the fatal shot," Charles "Chuck" Taylor, who was an agent on the Kennedy detail, tells me. Confirming that, Secret Service Director Lewis Merletti later said, "An analysis of the ensuing assassination, including the trajectory of the bullets which struck the president, indicates that it might have been thwarted had agents been stationed on the car's running boards." In the case of Obama, in the view of many current Secret Service agents interviewed for "In the President's Secret Service," the result of the Secret Service's corner-cutting could be a security breach with deadly consequences. Although Secret Service agents are brave and dedicated, the agency's management needs to be replaced. On the night of Obama's state dinner, it was a pretty blonde. Tomorrow, it could be an assassin. The ink had not yet dried on my last column that discussed the fact that Barack Obama was woefully unprepared for the presidency, and as a result...is making deadly missteps in the execution of that role, when news broke of General Stanley McChrystal in essence saying the exact same thing to Rolling Stone magazine.  This isn't just a story to be brushed off.  This is a bombshell.


Don't be distracted by the media comically chastising the General for daring to speak out against "The One" (yes, the same media that hailed military officers who were willing to "speak truth to power" in criticizing George Bush).  That isn't the story.


The true meaning of the McChrystal episode is titanic, because it is quite apparent the General was sending a stern message American people.


For more reasons than I can count, it is beyond obvious that McChrystal's public criticism of Obama...was not a lapse in judgment, or a mistake.  It was unquestionably intentional.  First, four-star generals have not achieved that rank...without knowing the chain of command, and the expectation of subordination to superiors.  Second, all of McChrystal's advisers were touting the same message...demonstrating this was no fluke, nor an offhand comment taken out of context.  Third, McChrystal spoke the inflammatory words to Rolling Stone, a well known anti-war, anti-military magazine.  Fourth, reports are that McChrystal actually saw the piece before it went to print and offered up no objections to its content.


If all that is true, then it naturally begs the question: Why did he do it?


McChrystal is one of the lead authors of the "counterinsurgency" strategy that, despite the nay saying of liberals like then-Senators Obama and Biden, transformed Iraq   from a quagmire into a success.  He knows the strategy works.  But as its architect, he also knows this new military policy requires two vital elements: lots of troops, and as much time as  necessary for them to do their job.

While other factors are important (cultural bonds, regional partnerships, financial investment, troop morale, etc.), the two most crucial ingredients to making counterinsurgency work (in Afghanistan or anywhere) is a massive amount of troops on the ground to overwhelm the enemy and live among the people, and a commitment to stay as long as necessary to break the will of the enemy.

This is precisely why counterinsurgency worked in Iraq.

Over the ignorant objections of both Obama and Biden, then-President Bush listened to his military commanders...and ordered the troop surge.  And while being pummeled by the media and Democrat political opportunists for not setting a hard deadline for withdrawal, Bush committed to stay in Iraq   until the job was finished. The result speaks for itself.

As the Afghan war began to deteriorate, Stanley McChrystal was put in charge to implement that effective strategy there.  But he quickly found that Barack Obama is no George W. Bush.  First, Obama having championed himself as the anti-war candidate cut the number of troops McChrystal requested.  And then, in what has to be one of the most foolish wartime moves in history, he announced an arbitrary date for the beginning of American troop withdrawal.

This may please the ex-hippies in the anti-war crowd that Obama courted during the 2008 campaign, but it has emboldened our enemy, imperiled our troops, and created a giant mess of our counterinsurgency efforts in Afghanistan. 

Having pressed his case privately with Obama's war team in Washington , McChrystal certainly saw the handwriting on the wall, and as a final recourse, pled his case to the American people.

Were his actions a breach of protocol?  Yes.  Did they rise to the level of insubordination?  Probably.  Was Obama justified in removing him from command?  I think so.  But after we're done hammering McChrystal for going over the President's head, we better give some serious thought as to why he was so willing to put his career on the line like that.

The reason is as clear as it is frightening: our political leadership in Washington is clueless.  And their incompetence is costing us not only resources and money, but most importantly the precious lives of brave American soldiers.
General Stanley McChrystal was willing to lose his job...to send that message to the only people who can do something about it.  He was talking to you!

Of course, my first instinct was
To toss her out the door.
But the chance to teach her a lesson

Part of rebuilding New Orleans caused residents often to be challenged with the task of tracing home titles back potentially hundreds of years.  With a community rich with history stretching back over two centuries, houses have been passed along through generations of family, sometimes making it quite difficult to establish ownership.  Here's a great letter an attorney wrote to the FHA on behalf of a client:

 

You have to love this lawyer........

A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply.

 

(Actual reply from FHA):

"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin." 
Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows:

"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than the 206 years covered by the present application. 
I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France, in 1803 the year of origin identified in our application.  For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella. 
The good Queen Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus's expedition.  Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it, and the FHA. I hope you find God's original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we have our  loan?"

The loan was immediately approved.

Proposed 28th Amendment

Governors of 35 states have already filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them.  It only takes 38 (of the 50, not 57) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

An idea whose time has come

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they didn't pay into Social Security, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform that is being considered...in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop. This is a good way to do that. It is an idea whose time has come.

Have each person contact a minimum of Twenty people on their Address list, in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one proposal that really should be passed around.
