Republicans' reaction to Representative Akin's controversial, imprudent and asine statement and their swift response to 'throw him under the bus' reminds me of an old, albeit juvenile, joke:

Just substitute cannibals with 'Republicans' and enemy with 'one of their own'.

Obama Needs 80% of Minority Vote to Win 2012 Presidential Election
Analysis: The incumbent's formula is 80/40.  Romney’s is 61/74.  Here’s a look at the color of the calculations.

     When it comes to those who will cast ballots, race, gender and class factor into a slim margin of error facing each candidate.

     For all of the numbers swirling around the presidential campaign as the nominating conventions approach, each side’s equation for success can be succinctly expressed.

     For President Obama, the winning formula can be reduced to 80/40.  In 2008, Obama won a combined 80 percent of the votes of all minority voters, including not only African-Americans but also Hispanics, Asians, and others.  If Obama matches that performance this year, he can squeak out a national majority with support from about 40 percent of whites — so long as minorities at least match the 26 percent of the vote they cast last time.

     Obama’s strategic equation defines Mitt Romney’s formula: 61/74.  Romney’s camp is focused intently on capturing at least 61 percent of white voters.  That would provide him a slim national majority  so long as whites constitute at least 74 percent of the vote, as they did last time, and Obama doesn’t improve on his 80 percent showing with minorities.

     These calculations underscore the depth of racial polarization shadowing this election and the achingly slim margin of error facing each candidate.  If Obama nudges past 80 percent among minorities (which seems very possible) or the minority vote share rises (also possible, though less probable), the president could gain reelection while winning only about 38 percent of white votes.  Conversely, if the white proportion of the vote increases just a single percentage point (to 75 percent), and Romney records any gains among minorities, he could shave his winning number to a more manageable 59 percent of whites.

     On its face, the math is tougher for Romney.  If he reaches 61 percent among whites, he would equal the best performance ever for a Republican presidential challenger with that group of voters: Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, Ronald Reagan in 1980, and George H.W. Bush in 1988 each won between 56 percent and 61 percent of white voters, according to polls at the time.

     If white voters maintain their 2008 share of the vote, that in itself would represent a significant shift. Whites have declined as a portion of the electorate in every presidential election since 1992, according to exit polls.

     That streak might end in November.  Obama could face both a numerator and a denominator problem in the electorate’s racial composition.  The denominator problem is that turnout among conservative white voters could be much higher than in 2008.  The numerator challenge is that economic dislocation, disappointment in Obama, and voter-identification laws passed in Republican-controlled states could depress minority turnout.

     And yet it would be dangerous for Republicans to bank on a declining minority presence.  Census figures show that the minority share of eligible voters has increased to nearly 29 percent; smaller turnout from that larger pool still could produce a minority vote share equal to, or greater than, that of 2008.  Republicans could blunt the impact of minorities by winning more of them, but Romney’s campaign seems to have no concrete plan for how to do that after a primary season when he veered so far to the right on immigration.

     Obama’s situation is hardly secure either.  He might need only about 40 percent of whites to win (compared with his 43 percent in 2008), but his approval rating among those voters has often fallen short of that, and Democrats couldn’t reach that level in the 2010 House races.

     The easiest way to view whites’ voting tendencies is through the prism of education and gender.  In 2008, Obama won a 52 percent majority of white women with at least a four-year college degree; these voters tend to be socially liberal and open to activist government.  But he captured just 43 percent or less among the other three quadrants of whites: men with college degrees, and white men and women without them.

     Romney’s team hopes to increase his vote share to three-fifths among college-educated white men and two-thirds among blue-collar white men.  But his advisers believe the election will be decided mostly by whether Romney can make smaller gains among white women.  Most polls show Obama maintaining or exceeding his strong 2008 showing with college-plus white women (he’s polling above 60 percent with them in some key states); Romney’s campaign hopes to recapture some of these voters by stressing the increased federal debt their children will inherit after Obama’s term.  Romney’s team considers it even more imperative to reverse the recent gains that Obama has recorded among blue-collar white women by his effective portrayal of the GOP nominee as an out-of-touch plutocrat.  Attacks against Obama’s record on spending and welfare will be Romney’s key strategy there.

     Republican strategists clearly feel the weight of trying to assemble a national majority with so little support among minorities that they must win three in five whites.  “This is the last time anyone will try to do this,” one said.  A GOP coalition that relies almost entirely on whites could squeeze out one more narrow victory in November.  But if Republicans can’t find more effective ways to bridge the priorities of their conservative core and the diversifying Next America, that weight will grow more daunting every year.

     Newsweek magazine has made headlines many times in recent months, mostly for its controversial cover stories.  This week, Newsweek has made controversy again – this time for publishing a strong piece by Niall Fergusson in which he details the many reasons why President Barack Obama has failed as the nation's chief executive and why it is time for the nation to replace him in the White House.
     Newsweek magazine is no stranger to controversy.  Following President Obama expressing his support for gay marriage, Newsweek made headlines by publishing a piece by columnist Andrew Sullivan in which he called Obama our "first gay president."  That cover piece was accompanied by an image of Obama adorned with a rainbow-colored halo.  Last month, Newsweek asked if Mitt Romney was a "wimp," which elicited a response from Romney himself.
     This week, in a political about face, Newsweek's cover story asks if Obama is deserving of a second term.  Fergusson determines that the President has failed and that Romney should be the next president.

     Fergusson calls himself a "good loser" for accepting the conventional wisdom in 2008 that Obama would be a transformative president.  He concedes that Obama has been transformative, but the transformation has not been for the best.
     Fergusson details the promises made by Obama at the start of his term as to where the economic recovery would be at this stage – He says that Obama should be held responsible for those unmet promises.  He goes on to note that the debt-to-GDP ratio that Obama has presided over has become an existential threat to the economic health of the nation.
     He goes on to attack the President for his hands-off style of leadership and quotes a number of senior White House advisors who have privately lamented how little supervision there is in the Obama administration.  Fergusson says the first two years of Obama's presidency were "parliamentary" in style and resulted in a Democrat-dominated Congress authoring and passing most of the nation's unpopular laws in 2009 – 2010; including the stimulus and the Affordable Care Act.
     Fergusson says Obama has advanced the "imperial presidency" that George W. Bush pioneered.  He says that Obama's stewardship of the nation's superpower status has been negligent.  While the administration has prosecuted the war on terrorism ruthlessly, Fergusson says the public mistakes this counter-terrorism tactic for a coherent strategy.  Meanwhile, his administration has ignored the rapid destabilization occurring in the Middle East since the dawn of the Arab Spring.  Fergusson claims Obama and his advisors placed too much faith in the power of the President's outreach to Muslim nations and peoples as a means of establishing peaceful relations.
     Fergusson concludes by saying that Obama faces a real threat in the substantive and compelling Republican presidential ticket.  He says that Paul Ryan's addition to the ticket makes Romney a more formidable contender for the Presidency as he presents a competing vision for the future of the nation, whereas Obama has failed to make the case for a second term.

Ryan psychs Obama out.  This has been apparent ever since the White House went on the offensive against Ryan in the spring of last year.  And the reason he psychs him out is that, unlike Obama, Ryan has a plan — as opposed to a narrative — for this country.

     "The voters now face a stark choice," writes Fergusson.  "They can let Barack Obama's rambling, solipsistic narrative continue until they find themselves living in some American version of Europe, with low growth, high unemployment, even higher debt — and real geopolitical decline."
     He says that Romney/Ryan represents "real change" and he, like so many conservatives following Ryan's selection to join the GOP ticket, wants "badly to win."

This is a special mid-week article by backyard food growing expert, Marjorie Wildcraft, that I know you're going to enjoy.
     Over the years I've watched in amazement at the lack of response as the bureaucrats of all persuasions passed laws that reduced personal liberty, violated the Constitution, or blatantly transferred more wealth to the already wealthy.
     At first I naively thought, "wow, this is surely going to cause a riot". But no, nothing really ever happened. Maybe some protests or a bit of debate by the talking heads on t.v., but nothing really.
     I continue to watch as more and rights are eroded away, more and more money printed, and the US Gov't continues to get bigger and more powerful.
     I figure Alex Jones is a prime candidate for a heart attack (and most likely it will be on the air) as he communicates atrocity after atrocity.
Surely people must be outraged?
     The Tea Party and the Occupy movement have some spunk, but nothing really in comparison to the magnitude of the crimes. The powers that be seem to be able to do anything they like and people just continue to roll over and no one really cares.
     I often wondered – just what does it take to make people really revolt?
     What does it take to get the attention of the average Joe on the street?
     What is the tipping point that will really bring this whole thing to a head?
     The answer to that question is stunningly simple, and profoundly prophetic. I am sure the children born into royalty are taught this very simple principle in kindergarten. World leaders certainly understand it. And CEO's of large multi- nationals figure it out early on in their careers.
     The answer came to me one day when I stumbled across an article published by MIT's Technology Review where researchers at the Institute of Complex Systems published their results on the question; what is the cause of riots? The study was headed up by Marco Lagi and his associates. Lagi thought the answer to the question of what was the cause of riots would be, well, complex. It turned out the cause boils down to one thing.
The price of food.

     Note that the price of food is not necessarily the reason for the riots – but it does create the conditions when rioting will break out.
     It makes a lot of sense. The average Joe is only going to get upset when he is hungry. When Joe is working as hard as he can and he can't feed himself or his family, and there is no other recourse… Well violence will erupt.
      Lagi and his group created a model based on food prices and plotted that against outbreaks of rioting. The model is surprisingly direct. And they got pretty good at predicting when trouble would come. In December of 2010 the model indicated that, based on increases in food prices, there would be uprisings in the Middle East. Lagi and his group tried to contact the US Gov't to warn of the dire preidictions, but well, just who do you contact in the US Gov't? So their letters went unheeded. Within a week of when the model predicted, Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in Tunisia in protest at government policies. And a series of revolutions followed suit.
     Turns out the United Nations also knows this. As food prices increased in 2008, the UN publicly warned that rioting and unrest would increase throughout the world. The UN FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) tracks and graphs world food prices, which by the way, is a much better indicator of costs than the overly- manipulated CPI (consumer price index). Currently, the UN FAO price index is trending down slightly, but is still very near the 2008 peak.
     As you know, the cost of food is steadily increasing. And the increase is going up faster than the usual few percentage points we've all come to accept. The most profound thing about Lagi's work is that he plotted out the current trends in food prices and his model predicts that by August 2013, if food prices continue to rise at the pace we've seen in recent years, the entire world will be in civil unrest. That means that within a little more than a year, even here in the United States, prices will have crossed the threshold and Joe is going to be very, very upset.
     So if you are like me and you've been wondering what would trigger this egregious situation we live in to come to a head, you don't need to go any further than your grocery store to get an idea of when it is coming.
     Many people have asked me why I am so passionate about backyard food production and helping people to grow their own groceries. There are so many areas to work on once you decide to start getting prepared: defense, medicine, communications, transportation… And while I certainly encourage you to get some basics in all of it, (yes, I love my Glock, herbal remedies, and my bicycle) I always was driven to work on the problem of how an individual can feed themselves and their family.
     I intuitively knew food would become very important as time went forward. But I really had no idea that food would likely be the linchpin to the revolution.

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the best quotes about the debt ceiling:

     "I could end the deficit in 5 minutes," he told CNBC.  "You just pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for re-election.
     The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified!  Why?  Simple!  The people demanded it. That was in 1971 - before computers, e-mail, cell phones, etc.
     Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year or less to become the law of the land - all because of public pressure. 
     Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.
     In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message.  This is one idea that really should be passed around.
Congressional Reform Act of 2012 
1. No Tenure / No Pension.   A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they're out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.  All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately.  All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.  It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.  Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
     Congress made all these contracts for themselves.  Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career.  The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.
     If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Don't you think it's time?
