When Representatives return to Congress in September, they may get a chance to vote on an amendment that would exclude abortion funding from health care reform. Both Republicans and Democrats have indicated that they would support such an amendment. However, there is another vote that comes first – a vote on whether Congress will even be allowed to vote on the amendment when the bill is considered. And leading pro-abortion members have indicated that they are likely to pass a rule preventing a vote on the amendment. The pattern we see again here, as so often in the past, is that abortion supporters don’t want to debate their position in a fair way; rather, they want to shut down legitimate debate to get their way. It’s one of many signs that they are wrong. – Fr. Frank
