Pro-Life Advocate Murdered Outside Michigan School While Protesting Abortion
Owosso, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Local officials and state police are confirming that a pro-life advocate was shot and killed outside a high school in this Michigan town. The person, who is described as well-known but whose identity has not been released, was shot multiple times while protesting abortion outside Owosso High School. LifeNews.com has learned that the pro-life advocate is James Pouillon and the local Argus Press newspaper in Owosso has confirmed that to be the case. He was reportedly shot multiple times. In the spot where the Pouillon stood, a portable oxygen tank lay next to a sign with a picture of an unborn child and the word "Life." Officials say the shooting occurred at 7:30 a.m. local time and most students were inside the school building at the time of the incident. The shooting did not take place on school property but officials locked down the school and taped off most of the front portions of the school grounds. State police have confirmed they apprehended a suspect about 8:15 a.m. at the suspect's home in this small community northeast of Lansing. Sara Edwards, the chief assistant prosecutor for Shiawassee County, has confirmed that Pouillon's pro-life stance was the reason he was targeted and said the suspect officials have in custody disapproved of his abortion protests outside the schools. "There was some displeasure with how open he was," she said. "He tended to carry big signs with very graphic pictures of fetuses." Full story at LifeNews.com

Slain Pro-Life Advocate Jim Pouillon Known as the Peaceful Abortion Sign Guy
Owosso, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Jim Pouillon was known as the sign guy by resident of this otherwise sleepy local community 45 minutes northeast of Lansing, Michigan. But Pouillon was shot Friday morning as he did what he did best -- hold his pro-life sign outside of a local high school letting students and teaching know some of their peers are missing. Cal Zastrow, a longtime pro-life advocate in Michigan knew Pouillon well, calling him a "close friend" and said he "got his martyr's crown this morning" after suffering multiple gunshots and claimed his life. "I talked to him on the phone this week and prayed with him before he went out to Owosso High School to minister," he said. While Pouillon was active in protesting abortion -- and his death will bring up the issue of abortion and violence again in the wake of the shooting of late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller -- he always condemned violence as a solution to the violence of abortion. "Jim was completely non-violent and he condemned violence," Zastrow said. Judy Climer, president of Flint Right to Life, described Pouillon to the Flint Journal newspaper as "just a nice, elderly gentleman who was disabled, used an oxygen tank and wore leg braces." Climber said he would regularly visit abortion businesses in Flint and Saginaw to pray and hold pro-life signs. Full story at LifeNews.com
Officials Charge Man Suspected of Shooting Pro-Life Abortion Protester Pouillon

Owosso, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Officials in this small Michigan community have charged the man suspected with killing pro-life advocate James Pouillon. They have confirmed that 33-year-old Harlan Drake shot Pouillon and say he did so because he didn't like that the 63-year-old man would protest abortion side the local high school. "Defendant was offended by the manner of Mr. Pouillon's message," said Shiawasee County Prosecutor Randy Colbry. "It seemed to bother him he was outside with his signs in front of the children." LifeNews.com has the details of the shooting and another one Drake is accused of, where he reportedly killed the own of a gravel company because of a grudge he held against him. Drake was apprehended at his home in the community half an hour from Lansing. He is now being held without bond and was arraigned today on two counts of first-degree murder and other gun-related crimes and is due back in court on September 25. Officials said Drake planned on killing a local realtor he also had a grudge against. Full story at LifeNews.com

Obama Administration Issues No Response to Slaying of Pro-Life Advocate
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) --
The administration of President Barack Obama was quick to respond to the shooting death of late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller. But, when it comes to the murder of a pro-life advocate urging students at a Michigan high school, the Obama administration hasn't said a word. LifeNews.com has searched the daily press releases from administration officials, the White House website, mainstream media stories on the shooting, and news search engines. The search reveals the Obama administration has been silent on the Friday shooting death of pro-life advocate Jim Pouillon by an abortion advocate who was upset that he protested abortion outside a local high school. LifeNews.com sent an email to Obama's press and faith offices hours after the shooting looking for reaction and never received a reply. CNS News also indicated it sent requests to both the White House and the Department of Justice asking whether a statement would be released on Pouillon's death and never received a response. Reid Cherlin, the White House spokesman that CNS News was told would be the one most likely to issue a response, did not respond to any of its repeated requests for comment or reaction. Obama Speech May Open Reconciliation to Force Pro-Abortion Health Care Bill
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The speech President Barack Obama gave on Wednesday night didn't win him many supporters for his pro-abortion health care bills among Republicans. But it may have lit a fire under Democrats enough to prompt them to reconsider using the controversial reconciliation tactic. Reconciliation is the special budget process normally reserved for emergency situations that allows the majority to push through a bill in the Senate. It prevents the minority their traditional rights to filibuster a bill and makes it so backers of legislation need only 50 votes instead of 60 to cut off debate. While Obama is supposedly hoping for a bipartisan effort to support his government-run health care system that would open the door for massive abortion funding, a leading Obama official says he and Senate Democrats may go it alone. White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod told CNS News that reconciliation is in play if needed to get the controversial bill or parts of it through the Senate. "[A]t the end of the day this is not just a matter of process. It's a matter of progress," Axelrod said. "And it's enormously important that we get something done -- and we'll get it done, and we'll do what the situation requires." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Thursday, as he has before, that he is open to using reconciliation to railroad a bill through the Senate without Republican support. Health Care Bills Don't Offer Conscience Protections on Abortion Obama Claims
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- President Barack Obama told the nation Wednesday night that he wants to ensure conscience protections for pro-life medical workers are in place in the health care bills in Congress. The Obama administration should get to work if it wants that to happen since the bills don't fully protect medical professionals. Obama's comments are contradictory in one way -- his administration has already started the process of overturning new regulations President Bush put in place to better enforce conscience rights. But his pledge also appears to be at odds with the current language, or lack thereof, in the government-run health care bills, according to an analysis from Americans United for Life, a pro-life legal group. On the Senate side, the late pro-abortion Sen. Ted Kennedy offered an amendment to the main bill in July which, AUL says, "would ensure that no health care provider or entity is excluded from contracting with an insurance plan participating in the health care exchange on the basis that the provider or entity refuses to perform abortions if performing abortions would be contrary to the religious or moral beliefs of the individual or entity." The Senate HELP committee adopted the amendment, but AUL says the scope of it is limited. "It does not cover providers who refuse to pay for or refer patients for abortion services," Americans United for Life indicates. Full story at LifeNews.com

Pro-Life Advocates Condemn Shooting of Abortion Protestor James Pouillon
Owosso, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Several pro-life organizations have issued statements today condemning the shooting of pro-life advocate James Pouillon. The local abortion protester was standing outside a high school in this small Michigan city when a shooter drove by in a vehicle and shot him multiple times. Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, knew James, who has been described as a peaceful pro-life sign guy. "We are stunned by Jim's murder. We extend our condolences to the family and share in their grief over his loss," Newman told LifeNews.com after the shooting. "His life was characterized by his love and concern of the vulnerable, and he will be greatly missed." "We denounce this senseless act of violence in the strongest terms, and pray that this murderer will be swiftly brought to justice," he said. The shooting comes at a time when pro-life groups have been receiving high numbers of death threats in the wake of the shooting of late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller of Kansas and the strong pro-life opposition to the government-run health care bills pending in Congress that open the door for massive abortion funding. Hours After Shooting of Elderly Pro-Life Man, Key Abortion Advocates Silent
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Hours after the shooting of an elderly pro-life man protesting abortion outside an Owosso, Michigan high school, prominent pro-abortion groups have yet to condemn the murder. The same groups that quickly condemned the shooting of late-term abortion practitioner George Tiller have so far said nothing about the killing of Jim Pouillon. Some six hours after the shooting, large pro-abortion organizations like NARAL, Planned Parenthood, NOW and Emily's List, which swiftly attacked pro-life advocates in the wake of the Tiller shooting, have yet to speak publicly about Pouillon's death. Mainstream media outlets have also been slow to report the shooting, with CNN taking more than five hours to compile a brief several paragraph report despite local and pro-life news media outlets like LifeNews.com providing significant details. The New York Times took over six hours to issue an initial story. While the "big guns" of the abortion advocacy movement are silent, local officials and a key pro-abortion blog have bothered to repudiate the killing. Full story at LifeNews.com

NARAL Finally Condemns Shooting of Pro-Lifer, Ignores Pro-Abortion Motivation
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Leading pro-abortion organization NARAL appears to be the first and only major group that backs abortion to issue a statement condemning today's shooting of Michigan pro-life advocate Jim Pouillon. However, the statement denies confirmation by local officials that the shooting was motivated by Pouillon's pro-life stance and abortion protests. "Today's shootings in Michigan are tragic and our thoughts are with the families so deeply affected by this senseless violence," NARAL president Nancy Keenan says. "Although law-enforcement officials still have not commented on the shooter's motivation, we understand that one of those murdered today was an anti-choice activist," she added. However, that's not the case. Sara Edwards, the chief assistant prosecutor for Shiawassee County, has confirmed that Pouillon's pro-life stance was the reason he was targeted and said the suspect in custody, 33-year-old Harlan Drake has confirmed that was why he shot Pouillon. Parsing Obama: We Can't Take His Word on Abortion Funding in Health Care
by Laura Echevarria

Should we take the president at his word when he says that no federal funds will be used to pay for abortion in the health care plan? Well, let's see what this actually translates into when we view it without the rose-colored glasses the media has been wearing for almost two years now. "no"—in the world of Barack Obama this could mean "no, not right now," "no, maybe later," "no for today but ask me tomorrow" "Federal funds"—this is money that comes directly from the federal government "will be used"—tie this with "no" and "federal funds" and it sounds like a winner, however, no one ever said the health care legislation would funded exclusively with federal funds. The health care legislation and those pushing it would mandate coverage for a variety of things (including abortion) but not necessarily pay for these things with federal funds. The plan calls for making insurance companies cover these conditions, diseases or treatments—abortion would be considered part of "reproductive care" and would be mandated.
