technology - "Every thing ever written or spoken by Man"

Has any one read or know anything about a storage & data retrieval technology that uses crystals?  Back in the '80s and '90s, I recall reading that a 2 inch sided crystal cube could store "Every thing ever written or spoken by Man."  I've not read or heard much about it's development.  (NGO that it is.)
