Rewarding people and businesses for their valuable participation in the community is more than a feel-good kind of thing for those being rewarded.  It’s also inspirational to those watching from the sidelines.

Such is the case with Thursday’s 2013 IMAGINE Awards by the city of El Centro, which partners each year with sponsors to recognize businesses in areas spelled out by the awards’ acronym.  These awards are: Innovator, Motivator, Architect of Change, Genius, Industrious, Noble and Entrepreneur.  This year’s awards went to, in order of the acronym, Caliber Screenprinting, Childers and Associates, Imperial Valley Press, Sanders Architecture and Engineering, Sobe’s, Heart and Hand and Johnny’s Burritos.  The seven businesses are among the more than 2,000 that operate in El Centro [, California].

Since the first awards were handed out in 2008, the practice has been to recognize those who exhibit all of the seven characteristics, with emphasis on one of those seven categories.

While this year the Press wasn’t watching from the sidelines, it was difficult not to be moved by stories of the other businesses that unfolded in video presentations.  Watching Patty McGrew and her daughter, Jennifer Thomason, describe the work of Heart and Hand, an assisted living residential home founded by the duo that was honored with the Noble award, was compelling and motivating.  Inspiration also came through watching attorney Ryan Childers describe his determination to build a practice in his home community, or restaurateur Sobeida Jackson tell of her appreciation for the customers that frequent the restaurant that bears her name, and all the others whose reasons for existing within El Centro resulted in public recognition.

Each year a group of people is tasked with sifting through nominations for the awards, which can be no easy undertaking.  And while we are delighted to be among this year’s recipients as Architects of Change, we also are humbled to be included in such an outstanding group representing myriad businesses and customer service in our community.

IMAGINE 2013 Awards
KYMA TV, Yuma, Thursday, March 28, 2013

With over two-thousand businesses in El Centro, Director of Economic Development for the City, Marcela Piedra said choosing only seven to win an award was tough but the idea for the 2013 IMAGINE Awards was to highlight businesses that shine in the community.
"We recognize the fact that they're creating jobs here in our community.  Some of the businesses have been here for over 100 years," said Piedra.
In a tough economy she says it is important to praise businesses that come to El Centro and Mayor Bill Solomon agrees.
"It's not like we're not doing the right thing, and we are.  We're just happy their doing the business in El Centro," said Solomon.
Apart from much support from the city, the fifth annual IMAGINE Awards has many sponsors including News 11.  Businesses that won were nominated by the community and were praised for many traits including innovation and motivation.

The El Centro, California Economic Development Department is responsible for business and economic development activities throughout the City of El Centro.  The division is the primary liaison with business owners, property owners, developers and local business oriented organizations to aid in the attraction and retention of businesses.
