Brawley Elementary, Central Union [California] teachers selected to LearnZillion's 'dream team'

LearnZillion, a learning platform that combines video lessons, assessments and progress reporting, announced Neil MacGaffey and Isabel Pimentel as members of the 2013 LearnZillion dream team earlier this week.
More than 3,000 teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators from across the country applied, and only 200 were chosen to the dream team, according to a LearnZillion press release.
"I was happy I had been selected," said MacGaffey, a Central Union High School math teacher. "I enjoy taking on new challenges especially when they will lead to improving my teaching."
MacGaffey said one of his colleagues notified him of LearnZillion and after looking into the learning platform's philosophy he decided to apply to be a dream team teacher.
"The application process asked me some questions about myself, my teaching, what I have done in the past and what I'd like to do in the future," MacGaffey said.
Pimentel, a fourth-grade teacher at Phil Swing Elementary School in Brawley, said she was researching common core standards when she stumbled upon LearnZillion's website and decided to apply as well.
"It was a pretty long application process so I was very excited when I found out I had been selected," Pimentel said. "I'm honored to just have this opportunity and to be recognized."
As members of the 2013 dream team, MacGaffey and Pimentel received an all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco in May for TeachFest, an intensive professional development conference.
Funded through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, TeachFest will provide teachers with the technology and support they need to better understand the Common Core State Standards and the best ways to teach them.
MacGaffey and Pimentel both agreed they were looking forward to attending the conference and working with educators intent on improving the nation's educational system.
"I'm looking forward to learning about the different teaching strategies that will help our students transition to the common core standards," Pimentel said.
MacGaffey said he was also looking forward to learning more about the common core standards, which will evaluate schools across the country on the same level.
"When I attend TechFest I'm looking forward to learning more about (LearnZillion's) philosophy of lesson planning and making student assessments," MacGaffey said. "LearnZillion is creating something very exciting at exactly the time it is most needed with the new common core standards coming out."
