Subject: Just up from my right hand you can see the black 45Colt I was
carrying on duty that day.
This
picture was taken at Castelvetrano, Sicily on 8 December 1943. President
Roosevelt was returning from the Tehran Conference with Churchill and Stalin. I
am the soldier in the background just to the right of George Patton's face.
They had just carried President Roosevelt back from the Dining Hall to his
jeep. I heard Eisenhower tell Patton that if he was going along he had better
hurry up and get in the jeep. Patton quickly approached the back of the jeep
and placing his right hand on the back spare tire vaulted into the back seat
next to Eisenhower. They soon left the dining hall returning to the airplane
which then flew President Roosevelt to Tunisia. It was 70 years ago that this
picture was taken. We saw it for the first time in May of 2013 at the FDR library in Hyde Park. The library sent me an original. 8x10 copy. -- John
