     My Gun Rights Ally, Whenever a high government scandal breaks, the finger-pointing begins.  Eventually, someone takes the "hit" as the "fall guy" so no one higher up the chain of command is indicted.  All reports said that ATF Acting Director, Kenneth Melson, was "the anointed one" to take the hit for Eric Holder and Barack Obama.
      Melson was to be the "scapegoat" for the mis-directions of the ATF Scandal "Fast and Furious" or "Project Gunrunner." 
     But guess what, Mr. Melson decided NOT to play "the Obama Game!"
     In fact, Melson gave secret testimony to Congressional investigators over the holiday, July 4th!
     Going against the rules of his own ATF Bureau, Melson brought his own private lawyer.  He told Congress in a secret deposition that the Department of Justice has falsely leaked stories to the press that he was about to resign, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley and U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa revealed.
     This situation has now put Mr. Melson at odds with Eric Holder.  A meeting scheduled between Eric Holder and Andrew Traver did not happen this past week.  But the July 4th "shocker" might give reason for Barack Obama to move forward in the confirmation process of anti-gun zealot Andrew Traver --- sooner, rather than later.  We cannot let that happen!
     Following the interview with Melson, Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa and Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley, in a 'SCORCHING' letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, expressed their deep concerns about the involvement of the DEA, FBI, and other agencies - including the possibility that they were aware of and even working with people connected to Fast and Furious suspects.
     Acting Director Melson made key assertions to Congressional investigators:

     Contrary to denials by the Justice Department, Melson acknowledged the agents had in fact witnessed transfers of weapons from straw purchasers to third parties without following the guns any further.

     The ATF group executing Operation Fast and Furious had been placed under the direction of the Arizona U.S. Attorney's office.

     In the shocking July 5th letter to Holder, part of it reads: "...His (Melson) interview had originally been scheduled through the Justice Department to occur on July 13 in the presence of DOJ and ATF counsel.  As you know, however, under our agreement Department witnesses who choose to attend a voluntary interview with their own lawyer (like Melson did on July 4) are free to exercise that right rather than participate with counsel representing the Department's interests."
     "After being made aware of that provision of our agreement, Acting Director Melson chose to exercise that right and appeared with his own lawyer. We are disappointed that no one had previously informed him of that provision of the agreement.  Instead, Justice Department officials sought to limit and control his communications with Congress.  This is yet another example of why direct communications with Congress are so important and are protected by law."
     Acting Director Melson's cooperation was extremely helpful to the congressional investigation.
     According to Melson, he and ATF's senior leadership team moved to reassign every manager involved in Fast and Furious, from the Deputy Assistant Director for Field Operations down to the Group Supervisor, after learning the facts in those documents.
     Additional wording in their letter said:
     "Mr. Melson also said he was not allowed to communicate to Congress the reasons for the reassignments.  He claimed that ATF's senior leadership would have preferred to be more cooperative with our inquiry much earlier in the process.  However, he said that Justice Department officials directed them not to respond and took full control of replying to briefing and document requests from Congress. The result is that Congress only got the parts of the story that the Department wanted us to hear."
     "If this account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DOJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand.  That approach distorted the truth and obstructed our investigation.  The Department's inability or unwillingness to be more forthcoming served to conceal critical information that we are now learning about the involvement of other agencies, including the DEA and the FBI." 

     The Committee continues to gather evidence, despite the stonewalling!  Now, through the direct testimony of Melson, it strongly suggests that even Holder knew about the illegalities of this project.  There is the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities.
     Here is the "bombshell" paragraph from the letter:
     "It is one thing to argue that the ends justify the means in an attempt to defend a policy that puts building a big case ahead of stopping known criminals from getting guns.  Yet it is a much more serious matter to conceal from Congress the possible involvement of other agencies in identifying and maybe even working with the same criminals that Operation Fast and Furious was trying to identify."
     The Department of Justice, under the direction of Eric Holder, prevented ATF from being forthcoming and responsive to questions from Congress.  This is the context in which Mr. Melson decided to submit to an on-the-record interview with private counsel, pursuant to a Congressional agreement with the Department.
     The damaging letter from the Congressional Committee went on to say:
     "Technically, Mr. Melson no longer enjoys the due process protections afforded to career officials.  Given his testimony, unless a permanent director is confirmed, it would be inappropriate for the Justice Department to take action against him that could have the effect of intimidating others who might want to provide additional information to the Committees."
     Obviously, Melson will not willingly be "the fall guy" for this botched operation, even though I am sure that Eric Holder wants him to take it, instead of Holder himself---or even "higher up."  However, now that Melson has somewhat turned against his Department of Justice bosses in this secret testimony, that might give Mr. Obama a reason to fire him and move forward in the confirmation process of Andrew Traver.  NO WAY! 

      In a strange "twist of events," now Grassley and Issa seemingly are on Melson's side.
      Their letter ended by saying: "For now, the Office of Inspector General is still conducting its review, and we are still conducting ours.  Knowing what we know so far, we believe it would be inappropriate to make Mr. Melson the fall guy in an attempt to prevent further congressional oversight."
     Just how far up the chain-of-command does this investigation need to go?
     Now that the ATF Acting Director has spoken, apparently up to Eric Holder!  Maybe even further than that!  Let's help Congress to get to the bottom of this.
     If the anti-gun Andrew Traver is confirmed, valuable follow-up testimony from Melson might be lost, but I am sure that Traver, given his anti-gun reputation, will not be forthcoming with information, either.
     Will you help us to get to the bottom of this?  Please fax and help us right away!  Our communications to every U.S. Senator will tell them the truth; and will implore them that Mr. Traver is NOT the one who should be confirmed!  Please respond today!

ERIC HOLDER'S GUNRUNNER SCANDAL FUNDED WITH $10 MILLION OF OBAMA'S STIMULUS MONEY

ERIC HOLDER'S POORLY EXECUTED ATTEMPT TO DEMOLISH THE SECOND AMENDMENT

There is a new little wrinkle in Attorney General Eric Holder's claims of ignorance regarding the Gunrunner Scandal – Holder's Department of Justice requested and received $10 million in funding specifically for "Project Gunrunner" as part of Obama's 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka the Stimulus Bill.  The damning evidence can be found on page 16 of the Act, under the heading "Department of Justice" and subheading "Office of Justice Programs"!  According to the Library of Congress the section reads as follows:
     "For an additional amount for 'State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance', $40,000,000, for competitive grants to provide assistance and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall be transferred to 'Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses' for the ATF Project Gunrunner."
     Eric Holder not only knew about Gunrunner, he requested $10 million to fund it.  The only question now is, how much did Barack Obama know and when did he know it? 
     "You've got people who are dead.   You have weapons that are missing and you have an administration that doesn't seem to want to take any accountability for it," Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT).
     Like something out of a bad conspiracy movie, it is beginning to appear that Holder agreed to the now infamous "Gunrunner/Gun Walking/Fast & Furious" program in part to help Second Amendment hating Leftists who sought to impose gun control by "proving" that law abiding American gun shops were responsible for Mexican gang violence.
     The plan might have worked brilliantly were it not for one murdered U.S. border patrol agent and a handful of dedicated ATF agents brave and honorable enough to blow the whistle on their own organization's shameful sellout of the U.S. Constitution.
     Even now, as the true cost and body count resulting from Holder's betrayal become evident, the Left just isn't ready to give up.  Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said in a statement that "no legitimate examination of this issue will be complete without analyzing our nation's gun laws, which allow tens of thousands of assault weapons to flood into Mexico from the United States every year, including fifty caliber sniper rifles, multiple AK variants, and scores of others."  Rep. Cummings apparently does not care that it was the U.S. Government, not its citizens, who sent these guns – in violation of standing U.S. law – to Mexico in the first place.  Anything to kill the Second Amendment – even killing our own brave border patrol field agents!   
     As the damning evidence and criminal implications mount, Eric Holder's Department of Justice seems intent upon stonewalling – adding contempt of Congress to the possible list of charges levied against the ATF and DOJ.
     ATF supervisors, acting as Holder's "yes men" and co-conspirators have already been caught red handed in a web of lies poured upon a suspicious Congress and a shocked nation.   While [LIARS!]--> supervisors told the House Oversight Committee that no guns were ever allowed across the border, whistle blowing ATF field agents have provided ample evidence to the contrary.  For every document the ATF powerbrokers have refused to turn over, brave agents-on-the-ground have turned over their own records, including emails from the very supervisors denying "Project Gun Walker" (now being called "Project Gunrunner" by the mainstream media) which, in the higher-ups' own words and directives, confirms the entire gun walking operation.
     ATF supervisors, surprised that their lies had been exposed, are now refusing to turn documents over to House Oversight Chairman Chairman Darrell Issa's investigators, claiming the need for redaction of sensitive and classified information.  Chairman Issa has made it clear that he wants these documents unmolested.  But given the current state of our criminal government, it is doubtful he will receive the evidence any time soon, if at all.  We must stand up for our rights before a corrupt Eric Holder and tyrannical Barack Obama seize our guns and our liberty without any hope of restoration or renewal.
     BACKGROUND: ERIC HOLDER'S LONG EXPERIENCE WITH GUN RUNNERS: Holder has been defending a Columbian gun running scam since 2007
     The DOJ/ATF "Gun Walker" scandal isn't the first time Eric Holder's name has come up in association with gun runners and terrorist organizations.  Just a few years ago Holder acted as defense attorney for one of the largest gun running scandals in recent history.  In 2007, then private attorney Eric Holder defended the group that funneled $1.7 million into the Columbian group AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) – a U.S. designated terrorist organization.   In addition to funding, Chiquita International Brands (CIB) helped the group illegally import over 3,000 AK-47s and 5 million rounds of ammunition into a country ripped apart by drug wars.   And Eric Holder not only defended CIB, he initially argued to the court that CIB had done nothing wrong.  When that did not work, he helped CIB negotiate a relatively small fine and eliminate legal penalties for the CIB employees who facilitated the illicit weapons transactions.
     Now it comes to light that Eric Holder's own U.S. Department of Justice, through its reporting agency the ATF, instituted a policy of assisting in the illegal export of guns to Mexican drug cartels.  ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) agents reportedly not only turned a blind eye toward illegal gun sales, field agents were forced by superiors to actively facilitate the transfers [aka 'violate the law'.]   And in at least one case, that of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, the cartels used those "gun walked" weapons to murder U.S. officers.
     In his recent testimony before Congress, Eric Holder claimed absolutely no knowledge of the "Gun Walker" program.  But given his previous work with gun runners, it is not far-fetched to imagine that Holder not only knew, but had a large hand in the program.
     Frankly, the ongoing DOJ/ATF "Gun Walker" scandal represents only the latest in a long line of disgraces associated with Attorney General Eric Holder, including numerous instances of his refusal to enforce or even abide by the law, such as the New Black Panthers voter intimidation case, the ACORN Voter corruption and funding scandals, federal court orders regarding "ObamaCare" and Congressional subpoenas, and his shocking dereliction of duty regarding the Defense of Marriage Act.   
     Rather than stand as the "top cop" and ultimate sentinel and protector of our nation's rule of law, Holder seems to be far more interested in traducing the law to suit his own cronies, radical friends, colleagues, business associates – plus random "clients" and high bidders.   
     How much longer will we tolerate corruption and outright trampling of the Constitution from America's highest law enforcement office?  Our current Attorney General is not fit to lead the Department of Justice.  ERIC HOLDER MUST GO!

     I am a child of the ‘60s. I grew up with the radical twaddle of people like Tom Hayden (the Ted Baxter of the radical Left), and Romper Room Revolutionaries William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, the Mao and Jiang Qing of adolescent radicalism. It was an overheated time made worse by nursery school traitors. It was a time during which the most pampered generation in the history of mankind went into an extended tantrum, punctuated only by the indulgent sighs of their misguided and clueless parents who still apparently thought the destructive impulses of their little darlings were somehow cute. Bill Ayers’ father, the late Thomas G. Ayers, Commonwealth Edison Chairman, Chicago grandee and symbol of muscular capitalism comes to mind. (Does anyone really believe that Ayers and Dohrn, wanted by the FBI, lived without family help and contact for 11 years “underground” in Chicago, the town his prominent father and powerful friends helped run and which has been described as having the distinction of being the only completely corrupt city in the nation? Please.)

     But Ayers and Dohrn demonstrated that low grade, child radicals, too, could be dangerous. Their simple minded nihilism was exceeded only by their almost complete ineptitude. But it is important to recall who they were and to know who they are because not only do they still exist and spread their poison, their very relationship to a national candidate for President should chill every thinking citizen. 

     An outgrowth of an earlier Leftist organization, the Students for a Democratic Society, was established in 1960 with a manifesto that represented a break with the traditional non-Communist Left. With Tom Hayden at its helm, it is unsurprising that it started as a shallow, self-dramatizing collection of students fresh from panty raids and looking for something more interesting to do. As the turmoil of the ‘60s continued to ferment, it became more and more strident, inflexible and radical in its project.

     After an internecine war in 1969, it split into different groups, among which was the Weathermen, a would-be domestic terrorist organization with little apparent purpose except to engage in violent acts in service of the national tantrum and of a badly articulated, simplistic ideology with little grounding in anything other than the romantic fantasy that they were somehow aiding “the Revolution.” The preening self-regard of its leaders was breathtaking. 

     Its primary activity was the issuance of dramatic “communiqués” from the underground in a grotesque imitation of stilted Soviet-speak, like a bad ‘50s movie, threatening violent action in instant mayhem. Its first act was a riot called “Days of Rage,” not surprisingly in Chicago. With its usual flair, the Weathermen announced that its protest would be the largest ever, but with its usual ineptitude, only a few hundred showed up. They blew up a statue honoring policemen who had been killed or injured in earlier riots. (They blew it up again when it was rebuilt several years later.) They burned cars, shattered windows and attacked policemen, injuring 28.

     Bernardine Dohrn, in an astonishing display of hubris, demonstrated her simple-mindedness and limited forensic gifts in her attempt to define their purpose: “We are building a communist organization to be part of the forces which build a revolutionary communist party to lead the working class to seize power and build socialism… We must further the study of Marxism-Leninism within the Weather Underground Organization. The struggle for Marxism-Leninism is the most significant development in our recent history. We discovered thru [sic] our own experiences what revolutionaries all over the world have found — that Marxism-Leninism is the science of revolution, the revolutionary ideology of the working class, our guide to the struggle.” 

     History has now shown us the merit of that project as even those who knew it best and preserved it longest have rejected the moronic and evil ideology that was Marxism-Leninism – but not Ms. Dohrn and Mr. Ayers.

     Shortly after the Days of Rage riot, the Weathermen risibly “declared war” on the United States. The sheer pretentiousness of these junior Bolsheviks was vaguely laughable. But they were deadly serious. Dohrn constructed and planted an anti-personnel bomb containing heavy metal staples and metal projectiles on the window ledge of a police facility, killing one officer, Bryan V. McDonnell, and severely wounding and permanently blinding another, Robert Fogarty. Their families never recovered. Ayers laughingly and emphatically admitted his participation and Dohrn’s skill in placing the fatal bomb.

     In 1970, the Weatherman attacked New York City policemen with bombs and firebombed the home of a New York judge presiding over the criminal trial of black thugs who had wrapped themselves in the mantle of radicalism; a favorite ruse of the time. They went on to plant bombs at the United States Capital, the New York City Police Department and the Pentagon, all the time issuing taunting communiqués suggesting more attacks were on the way. Had it not all been so lethal, it would have had all the earmarks of children playing war in the back yard. It is a shame it was not so benign.

     Despite their later, self-serving statements that they really intended to harm only property, the evidence is clearly otherwise. In 1970, an explosion rocked Greenwich Village, destroying a beautiful, privately owned townhouse. The townhouse had been converted to a bomb factory and, demonstrating the ineptitude for which the Weathermen had become almost as legendary as their infantile communiqués, three of them blew themselves up while making bombs. It was a fitting end to the meaningless lives of Diana Oughton, Ted Gold and Terry Robbins, whose deaths stunned their colleagues but left the world a little cleaner. The fragmentation bombs they were making were intended for the murder of American soldiers at a dance at Fort Dix and for the destruction of a library at Columbia University.

     Who were these people? Children of privilege whose nihilistic, radical project was intended to destroy this nation. They were, and are, at root, evil. Commenting on the Charles Manson murders, Ms. Dohrn told her “collective:” "Dig it! First they killed those pigs and then they put a fork in their bellies. Wild!" “Dig it”, indeed. The “belly” she was referring to contained Sharon Tate’s unborn child. What kind of perverted monster could find pleasure in the thought that a woman eight and one half months pregnant, on the eve of delivery, was killed and mutilated with a fork left sticking out of the unborn infant inher abdomen? That is the measure of Bernardine Dohrn and her consort, Bill Ayers, who attempted to suggest she was “kidding” when she made the statement. It is hard to imagine any context in which the “joke” would be comprehensible to anyone who is not unhinged by radical ideology. No, she wasn’t kidding. Anyone who could wantonly murder police officers with a bomb that shredded them like lettuce has no soul and could not be moved by the Manson Family’s savagery.

     And so it goes to this day. Dohrn’s latest ravings are of a piece with those of her past. In the July/August 2003 issue of the Monthly Review, she descended, yet again, into the pit of radicalism from which she never really emerged ranting about “American imperialism.” Fulminating about law enforcement and the reasonable effort by our government to keep its citizens, even those as unworthy and unthinkable as Bernardine Dohrn, safe. Gibbering about American “oppression.” Biting, yet again, the hand that protects her.

     Some things are not forgivable. There are some things for which one cannot atone. Treason is one. Betrayal of one’s country is another. Wanton murder, still another. But apparently there is forgiveness in Chicago. No one has ever accused the present Mayor Daley of an overabundance of grey matter. But he told the New York Times that he finds value in Ayers and Dohrn. He says Ayers “has done a lot of good in this city and nationally.” “People make mistakes. You judge a person by his whole life.” Mistakes? Deliberate, cold blooded murder is a “mistake?” Conspiracy to murder soldiers is a “mistake?” Mocking the murder and mutilation of an expectant mother on the verge of giving birth is a “mistake?”

     When Dohrn emerged from the miasma, she was offered a job at Sidley Austin, one of Chicago’s most prestigious law firms, even though she was denied a law license by the State of Illinois. The managing partner, Howard Trienans, a friend of Mr. Ayers’ father, thought she would make a fine addition to the firm. In the sort of dismissive sarcasm so favored by those who are not used to being contradicted, he said “She didn’t get her law license because she is stubborn. She wouldn’t say she was sorry.”  She didn’t say she was sorry, Mr. Trienans, because she isn’t. What more need be said? One wonders how understanding he might have been had one of her targets been Sidley Austin for representing the monopolistic AT&T, his most lucrative client. 

     Her fatuous narcissism continues to this day in her writings and defiant view that this nation that has brought freedom to the greatest number; this nation that is a beacon of hope to people throughout the world; this nation that nurtured the idea of liberty when there were none other to protect it from those to whom Ayers and Dohrn paid their fealty, is the major source of evil on the globe.

     It would be easy to dismiss Ayers and Dohrn as toothless relics of a forgotten age; witless simpletons reduced to legal clinics and the academy. But they are not sorry. And they still spread their poison. And they still have influence.

     Obama’s views on foreign policy did not happen in a vacuum. His disdain for the idea of American exceptionalism comes from the dangerous world view of the milieu from which he so recently emerged. His view of the military, America’s history and his opposition to war come from the environment in which he has immersed himself for these past 20 years; an environment sharply defined by Ayers, Dohrn and their allies and protectors. The New York Times would have us believe Obama and the Ayers hardly knew each other. Yet the exalted Mayor Daley knows them well in the hothouse of Chicago politics, and says so. Is it even remotely likely that an obscure state senator who lived three blocks from Dohrn and Ayers and was first introduced politically at their home does not? It hardly matters, though. They are cut from the same cloth.

     Knowing who Ayers and Dohrn were and are, we must ask ourselves: what sort of people would embrace them? What kind of people would excuse their acts and, more importantly, why? What decent person would welcome them into civil society? What does it say for a public official that he does not condemn them outright? What does it say of a public official that he would accept any help they might offer? That he is ignorant of history? That he is young? That he is naïve? Or is it because, when linked to others of his associations, he may sympathize with their twisted radicalism?

Long-time listeners of conservative talk radio are aware of audio montages where old-line media talking heads repeat verbatim a set of words that can't be anything other than shared talking points. A perfect example was the 2000-era Dick Cheney "gravitas" showcased by Rush Limbaugh. It's one thing to ask how proper reporting of Obama might have changed the outcome of the election. A View Of News From the Cemetery

Nathaniel GRIGSBY.  Son of Reuben Davis GRIGSBY Sr. & Nancy BARKER.  Born 11, October 1811 in Nelson Co., KY.  Died 16, April 1890 in Attica, Harper Co., KS.  Buried in Attica, Harper Co., KS.  He was a Civil War veteran of the 2nd Lt. Co. G, 10th Indiana Cavalry.  He was a farmer. Nathaniel was a dear friend of Abraham Lincoln. After Lincoln moved to Illinois in 1830, Nathaniel moved with his father to Carroll Co., MO in 1855. In 1860, he was living in Norborne.  He wrote to Lincoln and received an appointment as a Republican Precinct Committee Man.  He placed Lincoln's name on the 1860 ballot.  All of Natty's neighbors were Southern sympathizers.  He had been talking about electing Lincoln for president in town.  One morning at about 2 or 3 a.m. a neighbor rode up and told Natty not to light any lights.  The neighbor wanted to warn him that his neighbors were planning to murder him and if he wanted to live he should be on his way. After the warning, Natty moved back to Spencer Co., IN where he and four of his five sons enlisted in Company C 10th IN Cavalry (Richmond Davis did not enlist).  Natty was named 2nd Lieutenant. The family apparently returned to Carroll Co., MO but in 1885 they moved to Harper Co., KS and settled on a farm in the extreme northwest corner of the county.  In 1890, they moved to Attica, KS. Nathaniel was buried in Attica. His tombstone reads as follows: (Front) N. Grigsby Died Apr 16 1890 Aged 78 Yrs 6 Mo 5 Days 2nd Lieut. Co. C 10th Ind. Cavy (Side)Went to school with Lincoln.  Brother to Aaron Grigsby who married Abe Lincoln's oldest sister.  Visited in White House. (Shown Side) Through this inscription I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic Party.  I have watched it closely since the days of Jackson and know that all the misfortunes of our nation has come to it through this so-called party, therefore beware of this party of treason. "Treason" author: Ann Coulter (2003), a book review (pre-o'who?, recommended reading)

Ann Coulter's third consecutive #1 New York Times bestseller, Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism, hits liberals hard on two fronts: first by accusing them of pandering to Stalin and one of the most brutal Communist regimes in human history, and being weak on the current war on terror.

The theme is that liberals have throughout history sided with the enemy, or at least, whichever side is against the United States.  Going against the strong currents of academia and the historians that have long established Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy as a negative force in America who "destroyed lives and reputations" through his infamous "witch hunts," Coulter does the unthinkable by audaciously defending the late senator who spent his entire career in the Senate outing either Communists or Soviet sympathizers working in a sensitive top-secret positions.

For decades McCarthy has been labeled a liar by the mainstream media, and Coulter gleefully reprints excerpts from the New York Times and Washington Post and other sources that regarded McCarthy as a plague.

Coulter's rebuttal is quite strong, however, thanks to a top-secret Army project that was declassified in 1995 called the Venona Project, a sequence of coded communications between the Soviets and the Americans that have long been accused by the House Un-American Activities Committee and ex-Communists like Whittaker Chambers.  McCarthy was hardly a player in exposing what was already known.

Thanks to Venona, it is now absolutely confirmed that Alger Hiss was a Soviet Spy, despite his prominence in the Truman administration (and he was convicted of perjury before McCarthy ever became a senator.)  Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, among many others, were guilty of treason.

"It is a fact that hundreds of agents of this blood-soaked ideology became top advisors to Democratic presidents ...Stalin's agents held top positions in the White House, the State Department, the Treasury Department, the Army, and the OSS.  Because of Democrat incompetence and moral infirmity, all Americans lived under the threat of nuclear annihilation for half a century.  As Soviet spies passed nuclear technology to Stalin, President Roosevelt gave strict orders that the OSS engage in no espionage against the country ruled by his pal, Uncle Joe" (pg 34).

Yet for the last fifty years many in the media (and of course many liberals) touted the innocence of all those accused of being sympathetic to the Soviets - the Venona Project truly is damning and speaks for itself.  You can read many of transcriptions for yourself on the Internet.

So naturally the negative reaction to Coulter's book lacks substance.  Aside from the usual ad hominem attacks (it's a book by Coulter...who defends McCarthy...so it must obviously be bogus), her critics go for the only angle she allows them to hit on; the "liberals are bad" point.  Instead of rebutting the facts - such as the one of minor importance: McCarthy was right - Coulter's critics label Treason an anti-liberal "screed," saying its only purpose is to attack liberals.

Despite mass accusations, including one surprising criticism from ex-Leftist David Horowitz of FrontPageMag.com, Ms. Coulter does not label all liberals and Democrats traitors, nor accuse them all of being guilty of treason.

Horowitz's main problem with Treason is that Coulter lumps all liberals together accusing them of all being pro-Communists traitors.  And to be sure, the book opens: "Liberals have a preternatural gift for striking a position on the side of treason.  You could be talking about Scrabble and they would instantly leap to the anti-American position.  Everyone says liberals love America, too.  No they don't.  Whenever the nation is under attack, from within or without, liberals side with the enemy."

Certainly this opening paragraph would make any liberal fume in disgust, not allowing Coulter any room for the hyperbole that makes her such an entertaining read.  But let's not got lost in our emotions; Coulter never levels a blanket charge on all Democrats.

In his critique, Horowitz blasts Coulter for not recognizing the anti-Communist Democrats: "Is it the case that liberals like Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy sided with the enemy?  Of course not.  They were anti-Communists, hated by the left as “cold war liberals.”  And they were not alone.  There were many liberals – Scoop Jackson and Jeanne Kirkpatrick among them – who were just as worthy defenders of America and prosecutors of the anti-Communist cause."

Horowitz couldn't be any more correct, but next time he plans on criticizing a book it might serve him well to actually read it, for Coulter does not hide:  "There were, admittedly, a few rare and striking exceptions to the left's overall obtuseness to communist totalitarianism. The Democratic Party was certainly more patriotic then than it has become.  Throughout the sixties, the Democrats could still produce the occasional Scoop Jackson Democrat.  John F. Kennedy's pronouncements on communism could have been spoken by Joe McCarthy.  For all his flaws, Truman unquestionably loved his country.  He was a completely different breed from today's Democrats.  Through the years, there were various epiphanic moments creating yet more anti-communist Democrats.  The Stalin-Hitler pact, Alger Hiss' prothonotary warbler, information about the purges and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" – all these had their effect" (pg 11).

The middle chapters are a tribute to Coulter's favorite president of the last century, the great Ronald Reagan.  Dispelling any theories arguing the Cold War was won by anybody but Reagan, Coulter exhaustively recounts the days of the Reagan administration and how his did what the predecessors couldn't: bring the Soviet Union to a total collapse.

Sticking to the treason theme, Coulter charges liberals with opposing all anti-Communism measures and for sticking up for the Soviets (remember FDR called Stalin "Uncle Joe") at every turn.

Coulter wonders if there's a double standard looking back at the regimes of Hitler's Nazi Party and Stalin's Soviet Party.  "In 2003, the New York Times cheerfully announced the introduction of a new, 'lighthearted' journal about Communism.  This is an ideology responsible for nearly 100 million murders, or -- as the Times put it -- a 'divisive' ideology. How about a 'lighthearted' journal about suicide bombings or Nazism, also 'divisive' ideologies?  Or must an ideology commit ten times the number of murders of Hitler's Nazi Germany before liberals call it lighthearted" (pg 191?)

Perhaps more people would be willing to celebrate McCarthy today if he blew the whistle on Americans who were in bed with the Nazis instead of the Soviets.  According to Coulter, liberals by their nature have just been sympathetic to the Soviets and Communism ...and she provides plenty of evidence and footnotes to back it up.

Lastly Coulter defends the War on Terrorism, and as most know, she's a major proponent of the Iraq War.  Here one can debate the effectiveness of the Bush administration, as Coulter spends much of her book making the point that wars are won with Republican presidents and lost with Democrat presidents.  Mr. Bush is seriously in danger of breaking the cycle, even if Coulter would never accept it.

It may be too early in history to judge the success of the war on terrorism.  We've got a long way to go and I have always been one to reserve judgment.  Coulter herself was wise not to skulk or devote too many pages to the current war, because she knew it wouldn't be over with the release of her book.

However the story of the Cold War is complete, and Coulter does a convincing job correcting the record and the legacy of Senator McCarthy.  To be sure, I'm not necessarily defending the guy.  I understand he was bullish (as were his critics equally on him.)  He used dirty campaign tactics.  And Coulter defends the embellishment of his war record, though she argues it wasn't as embellished as liberals would have you believe.

The point is McCarthy was a human being, and an obviously flawed one.  But Coulter only wants to know one thing despite whatever you want to say about the man or his methods: "Were there Soviet spies in the State Department?"  Interestingly, no one has yet to offer a substantially rebuttal to Coulter's pro-McCarthy tome.  Sure, there are plenty of attacks on her, and her general belief that liberals "strike the position of treason," but it's a telling sign when they only thing of Coulter's you can attack is her vocabulary choice.

Like it or not, the Venona cables confirm it all, on top of what was already available such as the testimony from ex-Communists, and the mounting evidence Coulter presents in her book.  But it's the Venona Project that speaks for itself, and one must wonder why the media ignored the 1995 declassification of it.  On second thought, considering the case Treason makes against the mainstream media, no wondering is needed at all.
