     The gun business is booming. The question is, why?
     Smith & Wesson stock Friday was zooming, thanks to a stellar earnings report.  The firearms maker also boosted its outlook for the rest of the year.  Because of the strong business, its backlog of orders more than doubled from the same quarter last year, the company is concentrating on boosting production and building inventory.
     "We are underserving the market at this moment, we all know that, and that's a great opportunity going forward for us," CEO James Debney said in a conference call with analysts.

Gun Sales Surge: The Bounce Obama Didn't Expect

     Barack Obama was expecting to see a bump in his numbers after his Democrat National Convention acceptance speech on Thursday evening.  However, the bump that has occurred is in the gun industry.  The gun market is booming.  This is one part of the economy that has held fast during the Obama administration.
In a conference call with analysts, CEO of Smith & Wesson James Debney said, "We are undeserving the market at this moment, we all know that, and that's a great opportunity going forward for us."
     The gun maker reported stellar earnings which caused its stock to jump more than nineteen percent on Thursday.
     Because of the strong sales, S&W have had a backlog of orders.  The company has more than doubled its orders since last year at the same time.
     However, Smith & Wesson are not alone. Sturm, Ruger & Co. outpaced themselves this year.  They produced their millionth gun for the year ahead of last year's pace.

     Ruger President and CEO Mike Fifer issued a statement in which he said, "It took us nearly all of 2011 to build one million firearms, but in 2012 we accomplished it on August 15th."

Here's a report as to why the demand is so high:

     Speculation has focused on fears of a coming regulatory crackdown on gun ownership.  Liberal administrations tend to be anti-gun and so, the thinking goes, an Obama re-election would set the stage for stricter gun purchasing requirements.  Hence, people are buying now in anticipation of difficulty later.
     Indeed, looking at background checks for gun sales (a metric commonly used to gauge general industry performance) 2009 showed a measurable increase that many attributed to Obama's election.
     Is it the same this year?  Some anecdotal evidence tends to bear that out.

     Though the White House has confirmed that Barack Obama would like to ban guns, no matter what he actually tells people, it seems that he has become the poster child for gun sales.

     While some speculate that Obama is the reason for the gun sales and because of mounting cries for more gun control and regulations, others believe the issues if more about where the economy is headed and the opportunity for civil unrest.

     While some believe the gun industry cannot sustain such sales figures, others disagree.  Cai Von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen & Co., said, "We think there is broader drivers, broader acceptance of the use of guns and more target shooting.  So we think it's more than just safety and more than just fear of not being able to buy guns."

     Forbes reports that the trend in gun sales has been going on long before Barack Obama took office.  Frank Miniter writes,

     But the thing is the surge is gun sales didn't begin in 2008.  Over the last 10 years (from 2002 to 2011) there has been a 54.1 percent rise in the number of NICS checks and the increase hasn't all taken place since 2008.  In 2005 there were 8,952,945 NICS checks.  In 2006 the number topped 10 million.  In 2007 NICS checks pushed passed 11 million.  In 2008 NICS checks passed 12 million, and then hit the 14 million mark in 2009.  They increased slightly (4 percent) through 2011.
     So attributing this entire trend to President Obama's anti-gun reputation is disingenuous, yet many in the media like this explanation because by saying the increase in gun sales is only about President Obama they can then write the whole thing off as a simple-minded fear from those who "cling to guns and religion."
He also goes on to point out

     What has been happening is that the NRA, the NSSF and other gun-rights groups have been busy fighting for Second Amendment rights, advocating for participation in the shooting sports, instructing people how to shoot and store firearms safely, working with police officers and the military and doing a myriad of other things.  The NRA has also been lobbying, defending the Second Amendment in courtrooms all over the country and growing its membership.  As a result, they've attracted more Americans to the shooting sports, made the shooting sports safer and helped more people learn to shoot and to defend themselves.
     You can see this reflected in the number of concealed-carry permits.  From the mid-1980s to today America has become a mostly "shall-issue" nation with regards to concealed-carry permits.  (Shall-issue laws typically prevent local governments from arbitrarily refusing to give permits.)  Today 41 states have right-to-carry laws and 38 states have "shall-issue" laws. In fact, a total of 49 states have laws that, to varying degrees, solidify citizens' right to carry certain concealed firearms in public, either without a permit or after obtaining a permit.  Only Illinois is without such a provision.

Miniter does present a very balanced article which I recommend reading.  There is both positive and negative reasons for gun sales increases.  However, he ends the article with a sober reminder:

Though I don't want to discount the fear.  After all, when the Supreme Court twice comes within one vote of ruling that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Bill of Rights isn't an individual right, Americans have a right to be concerned.  When an incumbent president seeking a second term has already put two people on the nine-member Supreme Court who would vote away this basic human freedom, they have the right to be fearful.  And when you realize that, if reelected, that incumbent president would have a good chance of getting a few more Supreme Court picks, and so could reshape the high court for decades, people have a right to be motivated to buy firearms now.

     Eric Holder, the top law enforcement officer in the nation has a proven track record of lying to Congress and the American people.  Some members of Congress have been debating on whether or not to cite the US Attorney General for contempt of Congress for his testimony, or lack thereof, before them on Operation Fast and Furious.

     Ever since the botched guns to Mexican drug cartels fiasco was made public, documentation proves that Holder has continuously lied about his knowledge of the operation.  Even when presented with irrefutable evidence of his knowledge, he sat before Congress and lied to their faces without batting an eye.

     I watched part of Holder's testimony before Congress and his whole mannerism was that of a pathological liar.  One of my close family members is a pathological liar who believes their lies to be the truth once they leave their lips and it is virtually impossible to convince them otherwise.  I confronted the family member with a tape recording of their lie and they stood there and denied it was them or the tape was real.  I saw that same trait in America's top cop.

     Yet, most likely without realizing it, Holder actually told the truth for once when he admitted to Congress that Obama wants to reinstate a ban on assault weapons,

     "This administration has consistently favored the reinstitution of the assault weapons ban. It is something that we think was useful in the past with regard to the reduction that we've seen in crime, and certainly would have a positive impact on our relationship and the crime situation in Mexico."

     Chris Cox, Executive Director of the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action, summed up Holder's statement and actions this way,

     "The Obama administration — particularly Eric Holder's Justice Department — oversaw an epic scandal whereby our own federal government illegally funneled thousands of firearms into the hands of Mexican drug lords.  This contributed to the death of one U.S. Border Patrol agent and hundreds of Mexicans.

     "Despite being head of the Justice Department and our nation's chief law enforcement officer, Eric Holder claims he doesn't know how or why this scandal occurred, or even who under his charge may have authorized it.  He also refuses to turn over critical documents to congressional investigators that could help prevent something this tragic and corrupt from ever happening again."

     Therefore, Obama and Holder are confident that if they can ban a large number of the legal firearms that law-abiding Americans use every day for self-defense, hunting, and recreational and competitive target shooting, it will help solve Mexico's crime problem."

     Cox's synopsis is spot on target.  The only thing I would add to that is that Holder should not only be removed from office, but that he also needs to be admitted to a mental hospital where he can be treated for his pathological lying.  Then he needs to be sentenced to an appropriate time in prison for his actions and crimes against the American people and especially against the family of murdered Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

Isn't about time that Congress wakes and acknowledges the BATFE abuses and abolish the agency?  Plus, the DOJ, the DEA & the FBI should be curtailed from conducting nefarious activities.  Citizens' Constitutional Rights and the sovereignty of states & foreign countries should be protected by agents of the United States government, especially since they are sworn to protect the U.S. and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, while protecting the rights of the citizenry. -- rfh

Issa, Grassley: DOJ Obstructed Mexican Guns Probe

     The top man in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has turned sensationally against his Department of Justice bosses saying they were trying to stymie an investigation into the Operation Fast and Furious scandal.

     Kenneth Melson, acting director of the ATF, gave a secret deposition to Congress on July 4, it was revealed today.  He took his own lawyer instead of relying on one from the ATF.

     The stunning move will increase pressure on Attorney General Eric Holder to resign over the operation that saw some 2,000 guns sold to straw buyers who then sold them to Mexican drug cartel leaders.

     But Fast and Furious and its sister plan, Project Gunrunner, went disastrously wrong, and 80 percent of the weapons went missing.  Two were found at the Arizona site where Border Agent Brian Terry was killed in December.

     Republicans leading the investigation in both the House and Senate wrote a stinging letter to Holder yesterday informing him of Melson's move, calling it "extremely helpful to our investigation.

     Rep. Darrell Issa and Sen. Charles Grassley wrote, "He was candid in admitting mistakes that his agency made and described various ways he says that he tried to remedy the problems."

     Issa and Grassley said Melson claimed that ATF's senior leadership would have preferred to be more cooperative with the congressional probe.

     "However, he said that Justice Department officials directed them not to respond and took full control of replying to briefing and document requests from Congress.  The result is that Congress only got the parts of the story that the Department wanted us to hear," they wrote.

     "If his account is accurate, then ATF leadership appears to have been effectively muzzled while the DoJ sent over false denials and buried its head in the sand."

     Issa and Grassley also said that Melson claimed that the Justice Department falsely leaked stories to the press that he was about to resign over Fast and Furious.  They warned Holder against firing him now.  "It would be inappropriate for the Justice Department to take action against him that could have the effect of intimidating others who might want to provide additional information to the Committees."

     "Knowing what we know so far, we believe it would be inappropriate to make Mr. Melson the fall guy in an attempt to prevent further congressional oversight," they concluded.

     Just last week, Iowa Sen. Grassley told Newsmax.TV that he did not want to see Melson quit because one resignation would make it seem like the matter was over.  "There are too many people involved in it for me to be satisfied with one resignation," he said at the time.

     In their letter Grassley and California's Issa said Melson had been scheduled to give evidence on July 13 but brought the date forward when he realized he could take his own lawyer, Richard Cullen.

     "We are disappointed that no one had previously informed him of that provision of the agreement," the two GOP members wrote.

     "Instead, Justice Department officials sought to limit and control his communications with Congress.  This is yet another example of why direct communications with Congress are so important and are protected by law."

     The release of the letter came on the same day that Mexican officials said that any officer accused of supplying guns to the cartels should be tried in Mexico.

     "I feel my country's sovereignty was violated," Sen. Rene Arce Islas, the chairman of Mexico's Commission for National Security, told Fox News.  "They should be tried in the United States, and the Mexican government should also demand that they also be tried in Mexico since the incidents took place here.  There should be trials in both places."

     Operation Fast and Furious came to a head on Dec. 14, when Terry was killed in a scuffle along a smuggling route close to the Mexican border, and assault rifles found at the murder scene were traced back to Jaime Avila, who had bought them from a Phoenix gun shop.

     Avila had been allowed to buy the assault weapons even though the ATF suspected he would sell them to the drug cartels.  The plan was to trace the guns, with the hope of leading ATF agents to the drug kingpins.

     Even before Terry's murder, ATF agents and senior managers had expressed fierce opposition to the policy.  One agent called the strategy "insane."

     Another said, "We were fully aware the guns would probably be moved across the border to drug cartels where they could be used to kill."

     For months, ATF agents followed 50-caliber Barrett rifles and other guns believed headed for the Mexican border but were ordered to let these highly dangerous weapons go.

     CBS reports that one distraught agent often was overheard on ATF radios begging and pleading to be allowed to intercept transports.  The answer: "Negative.  Stand down."

     The Department of Justice, which oversees the ATF, claimed in a letter that the agency never knowingly permitted the sale of assault weapons to suspected gunrunners.

     Gene Simmons is most famous for sticking out his tongue while singing in the band KISS, but now he’s sticking out his tongue at President Obama too.  Simmons appeared on Varney & Co. this morning [14Jun11] and told Stuart Varney that he is embarrassed by the fact that he voted for Obama in 2008.  Coming from a man who usually wears make-up in public, that’s certainly saying a lot.
     Simmons explained that he was hopeful Obama would surround himself with business leaders and not professors:

“I want my vote back. This is a good man . . . but I don’t think the man is qualified to understand the structure and what business needs, which is to be well-informed. . . . Our President had two years of local experience, was born in Hawaii and never ran a business in his life.”

     Simmons first lost faith in Obama a few weeks ago when he made the controversial comments regarding Israel’s borders. Simmons has strong ties to Israel and called Obama’s recommendation to Israel the “height of lunacy.” Given that Simmons so passionately opposes Obama now, Varney was a bit perplexed as to why Simmons voted for Obama at all. The KISS icon admitted, “I fell victim to the charm and I wanted to be a part of that moment in history and I’m ashamed to say I didn’t look at the resume long enough.”
     With Simmons jumping ship, Obama might want to take efforts to shore up the aging musician wing of his celebrity base of support before anyone else bolts!

And, if you have a problem with America, you have a problem with me.”      Last March, he performed in a homecoming visit to Israel and said, "I'm Israeli.      An old prospector shuffled into the town of El Indio, Texas leading an old tired mule.  The old man headed straight for the only saloon in town, to clear his parched throat.  He walked up to the saloon and tied his old mule to the hitch rail.  As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other.

     The young gunslinger looked at the old man and laughed, saying, "Hey old man, have you ever danced?"

     The old man looked up at the gunslinger and said, "No, I never did dance ... Never really wanted to."  A crowd had gathered as the gunslinger grinned and said, "Well, you old fool, you're gonna dance now!" and started shooting at the old man's feet.

     The old prospector, not wanting to get a toe blown off, started hopping around like a flea on a hot skillet.

     Everybody was laughing, fit to be tied.  When his last bullet had been fired, the young gunslinger, still laughing, holstered his gun and turned around to go back into the saloon.

     The old man turned to his pack mule, pulled out a double-barreled shotgun, and cocked both hammers.  The loud clicks carried clearly through the desert air.
     The crowd stopped laughing immediately.  The young gunslinger heard the sounds too, and he turned around very slowly.  The silence was almost deafening.

The crowd watched as the young gunman stared at the old timer and the large gaping holes of those twin 10 gauge barrels.  The barrels of the shotgun never wavered in the old man's hands, as he quietly said, "Son, have you ever kissed a mule's ass?"
     The gunslinger swallowed hard and said, "No sir ... But... I've always wanted to."
There are a few lessons for us all here:

• Never be arrogant.
• Don't waste ammunition.
• Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are.
• Always, always make sure you know who has the power.
• Don't mess with old folks, they didn't get old by being stupid.
I just love a story with a happy ending, don't you?

The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the right to keep and bear arms.

But his real record, based on votes taken, political associations, and long standing positions, shows that Barack Obama is a serious threat to Second Amendment liberties. Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career.

FACT: Barack Obama opposes four of the five Supreme Court justices who affirmed an individual right to keep and bear arms. He voted against the confirmation of Alito and Roberts and he has stated he would not have appointed Thomas or Scalia.¹⁷

FACT: Barack Obama voted for an Illinois State Senate bill to ban and confiscate “assault weapons,” but the bill was so poorly crafted, it would have also banned most semi-auto and single and double barrel shotguns commonly used by sportsmen.¹⁸

FACT: Barack Obama voted to allow reckless lawsuits designed to bankrupt the firearms industry.¹

FACT: Barack Obama wants to re-impose the failed and discredited Clinton Gun Ban.¹⁵

FACT: Barack Obama voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting.³

FACT: Barack Obama has endorsed a 500% increase in the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition.⁹

FACT: Barack Obama has endorsed a complete ban on handgun ownership.²

FACT: Barack Obama supports local gun bans in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and other cities.⁴

FACT: Barack Obama voted to uphold local gun bans and the criminal prosecution of people who use firearms in self-defense.⁵

FACT: Barack Obama supports gun owner licensing and gun registration.⁶

FACT: Barack Obama refused to sign a friend-of-the-court Brief in support of individual Second Amendment rights in the Heller case.

FACT: Barack Obama opposes Right to Carry laws.⁷

FACT: Barack Obama was a member of the Board of Directors of the Joyce Foundation, the leading source of funds for anti-gun organizations and “research.”⁸

FACT: Barack Obama supported a proposal to ban gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park, which would eliminate almost every gun store in America.⁹

FACT: Barack Obama voted against a measure to lower the Firearms Owners Identification card age minimum from 21 to 18, a measure designed to assist young people in the military.¹¹

Bloomberg is at it again

Liberals in places like New York, Boston and Washington D.C. are riding high on the passage of President Obama's health care reform bill.  Emboldened by their backdoor success, liberal leaders are already setting their sights on the next round of political priorities.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun front group Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) have sent the White House and Congressional leaders a 40-point report outlining the anti-gun measures they would like make into law.

You might be saying to yourself, "We've heard this song before, right?"  Wrong.

The anti-gun elitist have changed their tactics.  Instead of trying to pass legislation through Congress, they want these changes made by regulation and executive order.

Michael Bloomberg and his anti-gun stooges want to bypass the elected representatives of the people and allow unelected bureaucrats in the Obama Administration to violate your Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

Bloomberg's plan includes the creation of a Federal task force of over seven different agencies from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the White House Office of Budget and Management.

Elements of the proposal, which is titled "A blueprint for Federal Action on illegal guns", includes a laundry list of anti-gun measures.

Just some of the proposed changes in regulation include:

• Bans on the importation of "non-sporting use" firearms
  
• Restructuring and expanding the authority of the radically anti-gun and out-of-control BATFE
  
• Mandatory federal "lock-up your safety" regulations
  
• Surprise "residency" checks on buyers who purchase multiple guns
  
• REAL ID and biometric validation of firearms purchaser information
  
• Increasing paperwork and hurdles for gun dealers to jump through

Simply put, the anti-gun lobby is trying to push its unconstitutional wish list through the federal bureaucracy and away from the eyes of voters across the country. Rest assured, the National Association for Gun Rights will do everything in its power to expose this outrageous, backdoor attempt to force gun control upon the American people. If passed, AB1663 would repeal the onerous ammunition sales registration requirements put in place by California Assembly Bill 962 (a model for other states.) As you will recall, AB962 requires individuals purchasing ammunition be fingerprinted and registered at the time of sale and outlaws mail order ammunition purchases. AB962 also requires dealers to maintain these records indefinitely and make them available for inspection by the California Department of Justice. As an additional burden, ammunition retailers are also required to store ammunition away from purchasers. AB962 failed to garner support from Attorney General Brown, and any law enforcement organization. In fact, 15 sheriffs wrote letters of opposition to this legislation. All of California's citizens, firearms owners, dealers, shooters, hunters, collectors, clubs/organizations , and ammunition vendors, should join in this effort to repeal AB962.
