Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll shows pro-life former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee faring the best against pro-abortion President Barack Obama in a preview of the 2012 presidential election. Mitt Romney is second best in terms of the percentage lead Obama has, while New Gingrich places third. The new survey from the Public Policy Polling firm doesn't measure the percentage of Republicans who favor a particular candidate. Instead, it measured how four different potential Republican nominees fare against Obama among all voters. The poll found Huckabee behind by just three percentage points, 47-44 percent. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, was seven percent behind Obama at 47-44 percent while Gingrich, the pro-life former Speaker of the House, came in eight percent behind Obama at 49-41 percent. Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice-presidential candidate who recently stepped down as Alaska's governor, was 14 percent behind at 52-38. Full story at LifeNews.com.
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- More national polls are showing that pro-abortion President Barack Obama is hitting new low approval ratings. The polls come at a time when Obama's health care plan, which contains abortion funding and coverage as well as rationing, is the subject of fierce opposition from most Americans. The latest Zogby International poll shows just 45 percent of voters give Obama a positive approval rating, his lowest figure since taking over the White House in January. Asked whether they approve or disapprove of Obama's job performance, just 45.3 percent of likely voters say they approve. That compares with 50.5 percent who disapprove of the job Obama is doing. Fox News analyst Dick Morris, a political strategist, commented on the new numbers to NewsMax. "As soon as Obama dropped below 52 percent . . . he was leaking real voters who had backed him in November," Morris says. "Now that he is down to 45 percent among likely voters . . . he is in deep political trouble." One key result from the poll is that Obama is now faring very poorly with the independent voters who propelled him to victory in November. Just 37.5 percent of self-identified independents say they approve of how Obama is handling the presidency. That compares with 59.2 percent of independents who disapprove. Full story at LifeNews.com.
Catholic Medical Association Opposes Health Care Bill Over End-of-Life Section
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Catholic Medical Association has announced that it opposes the government-run health care bills in Congress because the House version contains a section that could promote assisted suicide and rationing. The end-of-life counseling portion of the bill has proven extremely controversial. At issue for pro-life advocates is Section 1233 of HR 3200, the health care plan the House will consider when it returns from its August recess. The measure would pay physicians to give Medicare patients end-of-life counseling every five years or sooner if the patient has a terminal diagnosis. Pro-life advocates say the section opens the door to physicians pushing assisted suicide, withdrawal of lifesaving medical treatment, or even basic food and water. While other Catholic organizations like the Catholic Health Association support the bill, CMA does not. John Brehany, a medical ethicist who directs the CMA, told the Catholic Sentinel, ""While it is unfortunately true that physicians are paid for procedures rather than providing advice, and that in many cases people do not give adequate attention to end of life treatment decisions prior to a health crisis, the Catholic Medical Association cannot support Rep. Blumenauer's bill as it stands." Brehany said CMA would have to withdraw support until "it is clear that such consultation would be voluntary and that other safeguards are in place to protect the elderly against pressure to forgo legitimate medical treatment and care." Abortion Practitioner Leroy Carhart Lays Off Half His Staff, Says Abortions Down
Omaha, NE (LifeNews.com) -- Late-term abortion practitioner LeRoy Carhart announced today that he had laid off nearly half of the staff at his Omaha, Nebraska-area abortion center. The move came after a coalition of pro-life groups submitted a complaint to the state attorney general asking for an investigation. Carhart told the Omaha World-Herald he was not aware of the complaint and said he could not discuss the reasons for the layoffs. "This is nothing new," he said. "They are always making stuff up, and they aren't very credible." But, in a letter to staff that the newspaper obtained, Carhart indicated the number of abortions at his center has dropped off. He said the layoffs were the result of "the recent decrease in patient numbers and income." News of declining abortions at Carhart's abortion center comes as other reports throughout the year have shown the poor economy contributing to a rise in the number of abortions. A former employee furnished a copy of the letter and said four of the 10 people who worked at Carhart's abortion center were fired. Full story at LifeNews.com.
"Stoning of Soraya M" Star Jim Caviezel: Pro-Life More Important Than My Career
Hollywood, CA (LifeNews.com) -- Jim Caviezel, the star of the highly-anticipated new movie "The Stoning of Soraya M," says being pro-life is more important to him than this acting career. In a new interview, Caviezel talks about his reason for opposing abortion and the adoption that changed his life and family. Caviezel and his wife Kari recently became adoptive parents to an orphaned boy, Bo, and girl, LeLe, from China. He told the Catholic Digest that the adoptions changed his life in ways he never imagined. "Dennis Quaid told me a long time ago when he had his son Jack, 'You'll have emotions in you that you didn't even know existed before you had a child.' I now know what that feels like," he said. "Even though they're adopted, it's as strong as any instinct. That's what blew me away," Caviezel added. "I always thought if I adopted that I wouldn't have the same feeling [as I would] if they were genetically my own children. Nothing could be further from the truth." Full story at LifeNews.com.
Black Pro-Life Advocates Cheer Kourtney Kardashian Choosing Life Over Abortion
Hollywood, CA (LifeNews.com) -- African-American pro-life advocates are delighted that reality television star Kourtney Kardashian has chosen life for her unborn child over abortion. In an interview with People magazine that LifeNews.com recently profiled, Kardashian talks at length about her decision-making process. "My doctor told me there is nothing you will ever regret about having the baby, but he was like, 'You may regret not having the baby.' And I was like: That is so true," she said. "And it just hit me. I got so excited." Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King and a woman who personally knows the pain and regret that accompanies having an abortion, told LifeNews.com she welcomes Kardashian's decision. "The courage of Kourtney Kardashian, and the hundreds of young women who are coming to similar conclusions regarding unplanned pregnancies is proof that abortion is not the answer" for women, she said. Health Care Reform Should Include Telling Women of Abortion Risks, Problems
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading pro-life advocate disagrees with President Barack Obama's belief that there is a moral reason to support the pro-abortion health care restructuring bill in Congress. Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer says the moral imperative should be to tell women of abortion's risks. Obama participated in a phone call this week with liberal religious groups in an attempt to raise support for the health care bill among Christian voters. Pointing to Obama's comments accusing pro-life advocates of "fabrication" of the notion that the health care bill includes abortion funding and coverage, Bauer said the call was his "desperate attempt to sell government-run healthcare by exploiting religious faith." "The president tells us there is a moral obligation to reform healthcare, but the reforms he and his allies want to push through would include provisions to force taxpayers to fund abortion," Bauer, the head of American Values, told LifeNews.com. "Abortion is immoral primarily because it destroys an innocent human life. But abortion is immoral also because, as more and more empirical evidence makes clear, it harms women, psychologically and physically," he added. Full story at LifeNews.com.
Texas Gov Perry Better on Abortion, Bioethics Reublican Pro-Life Group Says
Austin,TX (LifeNews.com) -- Texas Republicans will have a chance to vote in what could wind up as one of the most bitter and hard-fought primary elections outside of the presidential election. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has announced her candidacy to take on sitting pro-life Gov. Rick Perry, who has been in office for two terms. The rub on Perry is that he has been the state's governor for two full terms and the two final years of the term of President George W. Bush, who left Texas to become the president. Interestingly, Hutchison won her Senate seat in 1993 and has spent the last 16 years in the position. Yet, during his long tenure as the Texas governor, Perry has compiled a sterling pro-life record and, as Texas Alliance for Life points out, "has signed more pro-life bills into law than any governor in Texas." While issues of Perry's long tenure and ability to win another four-year term next November are prominent on the minds of voters, Colleen Parro, the head of the Republican National Coalition for Life, tells LifeNews.com that a pro-life battle will also be at play. Virginia Pro-Life Group Launches Web Site Exposing Deed's Pro-Abortion Views
Richmond, VA (LifeNews.com) -- A Virginia pro-life group has launched a new web site exposing the pro-abortion record and views of gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds. The Democratic hopeful has made abortion an issue in the campaign as he has already gone after pro-life Republican Bob McDonnell on the issue. Deeds attacked McDonnell earlier this month but a statewide poll released last week showed McDonnell has opened a nine-point lead over his opponent. The Rasmussen survey showed McDonnell leading Deeds 47% to 38% with three percent of voters preferring some other candidate and 12 percent undecided. Now, the Virginia Society for Human Life PAC has announced the launch of www.DeedsisForAbortion.com, which it says is "a new web site dedicated to getting out the truth about just how pro-abortion Democratic gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds actually is." Holly Smith, the chair of the PAC, told LifeNews.com today that VSHL created it because Deeds has been treading on a "moderate" reputation when he is strongly supportive of abortion in all cases. Husband of Chinese Forced Abortion Victim Gets Second Chance at U.S. Asylum
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The husband of a woman who was a victim of a forced abortion in China has won a second chance to receive asylum in the United States. Liang Chen is one of many Chinese residents who flee to the U.S. because they are targeted by family planning campaigners enforcing the one-child policy. Liang left China in 2004, five years after his wife was forced to submit to an abortion when she violated the nation's pregnancy rules. At the time he applied for asylum, the Bureau of Immigration Appeals conferred automatic refugee status on the spouse of a person forced to have an abortion. However, according to Courthouse News Service, an immigration judge did not find Liang's story credible and denied the application. Liang appealed and, one year later, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey reversed the BIA interpretation of the abortion rule. He determined that a spouse was not entitled to automatic refugee status because of his wife's forced abortion. Full story at LifeNews.com.
