Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel "pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the promised land".
Nearly 75 years ago, Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the promised land".
Now Obama has stolen your shovels, taxed your asses, raised the price of camels, and mortgaged the promised land!
For a price, political candidates, interest groups, and activists alike can get their hands on a powerful and far-reaching tool to spread their message: a public opinion poll.
Polls were once so costly and labor-intensive that only well-financed companies could afford to conduct them. But today, anyone with a couple hundred dollars can hire a polling company to field questions to a sampling of strangers.
Organizations can instruct pollsters to ask specific questions, phrased in a way that will yield the responses they want.
When the results are not as revealing, these organizations can still control their message by publicizing their interpretations in releases or blog posts.
Last week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed an immigration law that launched a national debate. It has also at least temporarily helped her own chances of remaining Arizona's governor. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state shows that 56% now approve of the way Brewer is performing her role as governor.
Let me ask readers a question. What's more important: freedom and its undergirding principles, or the entity meant to protect it? A word of caution: be careful how you answer that question, because the way you answer marks your understanding (or lack thereof) of both freedom and the purpose of government. Thomas Jefferson -- and the rest of America's founders -- believed that freedom was the principal possession, because liberty is a divine -- not human -- gift. Listen to Jefferson:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men." (Declaration of Independence)
Jefferson could not be clearer: America's founders desired a land in which men might live in liberty. By declaring independence from the government of Great Britain (and instituting new government), Jefferson, et al., did not intend to erect an idol (government) that men would worship. They created a mechanism designed to protect that which they considered to be their most precious possession: liberty. In other words, the government they created by the Constitution of 1787 was not the object; freedom's protection was the object.
Again, listen to Jefferson: "That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men." In other words, government is not the end; it is the means. Government is not the goal; it is the vehicle used to reach the goal. Nowhere did Jefferson (and the rest of America's founders) express the sentiment that government, itself, was the objective. Listen to Jefferson once more:
"That whenever ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." (Declaration) (Emphasis added.)
Jefferson is clear: people have a right to alter or abolish ANY FORM OF GOVERNMENT that becomes destructive to liberty. To America's founders, there was no such thing as a sacred cow when it came to government. Government had but one purpose: "to secure these rights." When ANY FORM of government stops protecting sacred, God-given liberties, it is the right and duty of people to do whatever they deem appropriate to secure their liberties -- even to abolishing the government.
To America's founders, patriotism had everything to do with the love of liberty, not the love of government! Today's brand of patriotism (at least as expressed by many) is totally foreign to the fundamental principles of liberty upon which America was built. I'm talking about the idea that government is an end and aim in itself; the idea that government must be protected from the people; the idea that bigger government equals better government; the idea that criticism of the government makes one unpatriotic; the idea that government is a panacea for all our ills; and the idea that loyalty to the nation equals loyalty to the government. All of this is a bunch of bull manure!
When government -- ANY GOVERNMENT -- stops protecting the liberties of its citizens, and especially when it begins trampling those liberties, it has become a "destructive" power, and needs to be altered or abolished. Period.
Can any honest, objective citizen not readily recognize that the current central government in Washington, D.C., long ago stopped protecting the God-given rights of free men, and has become a usurper of those rights? Is there the slightest doubt in the heart of any lover of liberty that the biggest threat to our liberties is not to be found in any foreign capital, but in that putrid province by the Potomac?
Therefore, we must cast off this phony idea that we owe some kind of devotion to the "system." Away with the notion that vowing to protect and prolong the "powers that be" makes us "good" Americans. The truth is, there is very little in Washington, D.C., that is worthy of protecting or prolonging. The "system" is a ravenous BEAST that is gorging itself on our liberties!
Patriotism has nothing to do with supporting a President, or being loyal to a political party, or anything of the sort.
Schurz then later expanded on this short statement in a speech delivered at the Anti-Imperialistic Conference in Chicago, Illinois, on October 17, 1899. He said, "I confidently trust that the American people will prove themselves . . . too wise not to detect the false pride or the dangerous ambitions or the selfish schemes which so often hide themselves under that deceptive cry of mock patriotism: 'Our country, right or wrong!' They will not fail to recognize that our dignity, our free institutions and the peace and welfare of this and coming generations of Americans will be secure only as we cling to the watchword of TRUE patriotism: 'Our country -- when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right.'" Amen! In a free society, genuine patriotism demands that our country be RIGHT, as our nation's policies and practices reflect the values and principles of its citizens. To feign some kind of robotic devotion to a nation without regard to sacred principle or constitutional fidelity is to become a mindless creature: at best, to be manipulated by any and every Machiavellian that comes along, or, at worst, to be a willing participant in tyranny. As to loyalty to a President merely because he is President, Theodore Roosevelt may have said it best:
"Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President or any other public official save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth--whether about the President or anyone else." Hence, freedom-loving Americans cannot afford to become infatuated with Washington, D.C. We cannot allow these propagandists on network television to distort the meaning of true patriotism in our hearts.
Patriotism means we love freedom. It means we understand that freedom is a gift of God. It means we understand that government has only one legitimate function: to protect freedom. It means that our love of liberty demands that we oppose, alter, or even abolish ANY FORM of government that becomes destructive to these ends. And it means that we will never allow government to steal liberty from our hearts.
As I asked at the beginning of this column, What's more important: freedom and its undergirding principles, or the entity meant to protect it? The right answer is, freedom and its undergirding principles. If you understand that, then you rightly understand that the current government we find ourselves under is in desperate need of replacement. And whatever, however, and whenever that replacement reveals itself is not nearly as important as that liberty is preserved.
On the other hand, if you mistakenly believe that government (the entity meant to protect liberty) is more important than liberty, you are both tragically deceived and pathetically impotent to preserving freedom. You may also have identified yourself as an enemy of freedom.
As for me and my house, we will stand with Jefferson's Declaration of Independence -- in whatever form it may present itself in a modern world bent on dismantling our liberties. In other words, I pledge no loyalty to any government that seeks to destroy our freedom -- including the current one!

GLOATING OVER COURT RULING IN 'HELLER II'
REVEALS BRADY CAMPAIGN'S GUN BAN PHILOSOPHY

Following the dismissal of a second lawsuit against the District of Columbia by Dick Anthony Heller in U.S. District Court (his first lawsuit resulted in the 2008 Heller ruling), the Brady Campaign for the Prevention of Gun Violence was a little too quick on the trigger in its press release applauding Judge Ricardo M. Urbina's decision.
Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke, who has garnered quite a bit of self-created publicity lately in his war against Starbucks Coffee, admitted quite by accident that his organization still believes in banning entire classes of firearms, despite the 2008 Supreme Court ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller that such bans would not pass constitutional muster.
But that doesn't matter to the Brady Bunch. Their agenda has always been one of gun prohibition, not control. The kinds of controls they consider "common sense" are so Draconian in nature that they actually discourage firearms ownership, and lower the civil right to keep and bear arms to the level of a highly-regulated privilege.
Helmke admonished politicians and legislatures "at all levels" to "stop using the Second Amendment as an excuse for inaction" against what the anti-gun lobby has cleverly dubbed "gun violence." (After all, what is the difference between "gun violence" and any other kind of criminal violence that results in someone being injured or killed? Is someone any less dead if they are stabbed, strangled, burned or bludgeoned? Helmke's crew has never explained that, but evidently they think there is a difference.)
Millions of Americans understand that the Second Amendment is not "an excuse" for anything. Law-abiding citizens are not "hiding behind" a constitutional guarantee when they oppose the imposition of extremist regulations like those adopted in the District of Columbia, which Helmke finds so reasonable. These regulations include an onerous registration process requiring a ballistics check of the handgun, a written test and proof of good eyesight.
District regulations also ban so-called "assault weapons," the definition of which has become so nebulous over the years that just about any firearm someone does not like could fall within its scope, particularly if it is a semiautomatic. The Brady group is just fine with that; they think it is a grand idea. Helmke says the aforementioned politicians and legislatures "should follow the District's example and pass the strong, common sense gun laws Americans need and demand to protect their communities."
The Brady Campaign has been disingenuous at best over the years. It was on the losing side in the Heller case, but subsequently turned around and claimed that since there is an individual right to keep and bear arms, and the door has been left open to "reasonable regulation," then it is reasonable, in their opinion, to essentially regulate gun ownership into extinction. The right would still exist, but exercising it would become a regulatory nightmare.
The Brady Campaign is not now, nor has it ever been, to "prevent gun violence." Their campaign has always been to prevent gun ownership.

The Democratic National Committee this morning released this clip of the president rallying the troops, if rather coolly, for 2010. Obama's express goal: "reconnecting" with the voters who voted for the first time in 2008, but who may not plan to vote in the lower-profile Congressional elections this year.
Obama speaks with unusual demographic frankness about his coalition in his appeal to "young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 [to] stand together once again."
Turning out those so-called "surge" voters -- who turned out for the first time to back Obama, but who sat out gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia last year -- has become the Democrats' central pre-occupation for the midterm elections, and the new Democratic effort to nationalize the election around Obama and his agenda mark an attempt to energize those voters.

Last week, two friends and I were discussing my sense that there is a recent and sudden surge of leftist propaganda vilifying Tea-Party supporters and Conservatives generally, especially 'Consitutionalists', defenders of the 2nd Amendment, Pro-Life and States Rights advocates.
The rhetoric being hurled by prominent Democrat Party members and MSNBC muckrakers insinuates that insurrection, armed resistance, and violence is part-in-parcel with any anti-tax, anti-Big Government, anti-socialist speech ...translation: anti-administration speech is verboten!
Having failed to marginalize the growing distrust of 'his' regime's plans to 'fundamentally transform' America, he and his fellow travelers' jack-boot fear-mongering exposes their fears of losing momentum in Congress before a repudiation at the polls on November 2nd.
Our conversations were spurred by their having visited this blog, watched some 'pundit' shows on Fox News and from some MSNBC spittle. (They don't consider the likes of Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann as biased commentators.)
I voiced concerns that demonizing Conservatives and Traditional American Values is merely a 'smoke screen' used to minimize publicity exposing the socialist democrat agenda of the current President and his policy co-conspirators. Of particular objection by the other two are characterizations in cartoons that imply the the current President is 'out of his league' and that Conservative commentators unfairly mock his efforts to fix America's problems.
It was my suggestion that the 'toon is not demeaning and certainly doesn't rise to the level of vehemence that was so often displayed by 'left leaning' media when it routinely "bashed" President Bush (II) with a relentless and monotonous negative mantra. (Except when they fearfully sought a leader to defend us from 'the evil East' post 9.11 when they would have willingly extolled a 'Vlad the Impaler' or "The Hammer" Martel.) They suggested that the vitriolic attacks against Bush were deserved whereas the current President should not be the 'butt' of jokes. They disagree that the current President has surrounded himself with communists, marxists and former radicals implied by this 'bumper sticker.'
The didn't agree that Bill Ayers is a friend of the current President now or in the past and denied strongly that the current President associates with communists, marxists or self described revolutionaries, ideologues, or an unrepentant domestic terrorist bomber. Though I defer on understanding his relationships, it was my impression that the two may have been, at some point, mesmerized by "The One."
It's not suprising that a new (Plum Book) hasn't been issued. The Plum Book is used to identify presidentially appointed positions within the Federal Government.
Discussing the 'health care' bill with one of the gentlemen led to an interesting take on the 'inalienable right' for all to have 'free' medical care .. when I said that it is my understanding of the Constitution that government has no business bestowing benefits on people at the expense of others nor should 'not accepting' government welfare be a 'criminal' offense. The retort to my Constitution "theory" was that the Constitution needs to be changed!
The conversation brought to mind some old mean spirited political 'editorials' from presidential campaigns of old. "The term "muckraker" was taken from the fictional character in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, a man who was consigned to rake muck endlessly, never lifting his eyes from his drudgery." Dozens and dozens of similar hateful public attacks have been levied against other Presidents and candidates since the earliest days of our Republic. For those who support the current President, it would behoove them to dig a little deeper into American History beyond the MSNBC prattle.
As for those who are keeping an "arms length" relationship from and giving the current President 'plausible deniability' while they try, on his behalf, to vilify and discredit Americans who dissent from 'transforming America' let me suggest that they quickly review the failed play book of the former minister of the 'Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propagandaministerium' in order to see their own future past. Its followers believed also that their Führer was the Messiah that was destined to lead their country to greatness.
This administration's paranoia and its propensity for stealth and secrecy is exemplified by "Net Neutrality" legislation it is seeking. Its provisions to stifle Free Speech and criticism on the Internet is far-reaching. Once one media form is controlled, muzzling radio, print media, TV, even the pulpit is only a child's step away. Satirical parodies like the one below may be censored as could your speech in blogs.
Why would anyone, like Klein and his ilk, go "on the air" and make such preposterous statements about non-government citizenry? Is it possible that a sinister plot has been hatched? Recall that two of the Democrat candidates for the Presidency during 2008 referred, on several occasions, to "not wasting a crisis." One of those persons was elected President of the United States.
Recognizing that he and most all of his cabinet, staff and 'front-men' in Congress, media mouthpieces, and mentor George Soros are staunch anti-gun proponents. What better way to "create a crisis" than to incite some crazy person to respond to the vicious propaganda and rumors being spread about like manure on a field that they could then use as an excuse to ram gun-control legislation through Congress. It stinks yet it can fertilize the growth of a militant reaction which in turn would excuse 'crisis knee-jerk legislation', "Executive Action", and begin gun-confiscation not unlike that in Australia and England. It only takes a spark to ignite a 'rush to judgement' which has never been seen in the U.S. outside the aberration in New Orleans during the Katrina crisis.
It is no accident that the worms of deceit and dissension are crawling out of the left's bag of tricks as part of a well choreographed 'spontaneous' media blitz. Political action is usually preceded the laying of ground work among the electorate. Failing to garner public support, legislators and government leaders hunt for any excuse to mobilize against their target. What more self serving and sinister deception might be playing out before our very eyes and ears?
To force a pun, "They need to trigger a crisis."

P.S. My favorite 2008 Presidential candidates, more or less in this order, were: Mike Huckabee, Alan Keyes, Fred Thompson, Chuck Baldwin and Ron Paul (issues not personality.) Like many, I voted for the single 'last-man standing' opposition candidate, who regretfully didn't have a 'locked down' block of voters.
My friends opined: "Huckabee ...He's a cracker. Keyes ...an Uncle Tom." I remain nonplussed. Obviously, the 60's term "The Man" has taken on a new meaning.
I plan to post some information on an alternate to the "straight up'n down" ballot system we use for all of our elections. There is an alternative voting scheme that allows you to vote for multiple candidates/issues and in order of preference. It might resolve frustrations that some of us have on being forced to vote for a single candidate who doesn't support our positions on issues and which could also address some of the concerns about the huge amounts of monies spent by candidates trying to become "king of the mountain."

In November 1939 a "Negro Project" leader feared that the project would be in "a great danger" of failing because "the Negroes think it a plan for extermination." Sanger later wrote him back saying, "We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population ..." She goes on saying that use of the Negro minister would effectively "straighten ... any rebellious members." Media regularly "accuses" defenders of life as being "right wing extremists" in print, audio, and video news. It rarely, if ever, shows the 'death mills' and the horrid results of the atrocities committed within them.
