MEXICO CITY — The sole survivor in the massacre of 72 illegal immigrants headed to the U.S. has said a notorious drug gang gunned them all down after they refused to work as assassins, according to a source at the prosecutor's office for the state of Tamaulipas quoted in Mexican media.

      The teen — an Ecuadorian who escaped and stumbled wounded to a military checkpoint on a highway — told authorities that his captors had identified themselves as Zetas, a drug gang whose control of parts of the northern state of Tamaulipas is so brutal and complete that even many Mexicans avoid traveling its highways.

      The 19-year-old staggered to the checkpoint with a bullet wound in his neck and face, saying he had played dead to escape from Zetas gunmen at a ranch in San Fernando, just 100 miles south of Brownsville, Texas.

      He told investigators that Zetas gunmen intercepted the migrants as they moved toward the border, then took them blindfolded to the ranch where they were told to hand over cash, the source said.

      The migrants had little cash, the teen reportedly said, and the gunmen then told them they could work as Zetas assassins and get paid $2,000 a month. It was not clear if they were supposed to work in the United States.

      When the migrants refused, the gunmen opened fire, the source described the teen as saying.

      While the teen's name had been reported earlier, msnbc.com has decided to remove it given concerns he could be targeted.

      The new Boycott List includes a "Dishonorable Mention" section, which identifies charitable groups that are associated with Planned Parenthood and/or its agenda. Groups named in this section include Lions Clubs, the American Cancer Society, Easter Seals, Boys & Girls Clubs, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Camp Fire, Girls Inc., Girl Scouts, Kiwanis Clubs, March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Rotary Clubs, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Salvation Army, YWCA, America Gives Back (formerly [American] Idol Gives Back), and YMCA, among others.
      "This has not been some sort of 'Jesse Jackson boycott' where we make news for a few days and then go away," said LDI Chairman Thomas C. Strobhar. There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia .  The time for double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and submission is over. 

The proposed " Cordoba House" overlooking the World Trade Center site -- where a group of jihadists killed over 3000 Americans and destroyed one of our most famous landmarks -- is a test of the timidity, passivity and historic ignorance of American elites.

For example, most of them don't understand that Cordoba House is a deliberately insulting term.  It refers to Cordoba , Spain , the capital of Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world's third-largest mosque complex.

Today, some backers of the proposed Ground Zero mosque insist this term is being used to "symbolize interfaith cooperation" when, in fact, every Islamist in the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest.  It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way.

These Islamists and their apologists who argue for "religious toleration" are arrogantly dishonest.  They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City .  Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia .  In fact, no Christian or Jew can even enter Mecca .  And they lecture us about tolerance.

If the people behind the Cordoba House were serious about religious toleration, they would be imploring the Saudis, as fellow Muslims, to immediately open up Mecca to all and to immediately announce their intention to allow non-Muslim houses of worship in the Kingdom.  They should be asked by the news media if they would be willing to lead such a campaign.
 
We have not been able to rebuild the World Trade Center in nine years.  Now we are being told a 13-story, $100 million megamosque will be built within a year overlooking the site of the most devastating surprise attack in American history. 

Finally, where is the money coming from?  The people behind the Cordoba House refuse to reveal all their funding sources.
 
America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization.  Sadly, too many of our elites are the willing apologists for those who would destroy them if they could.
 
No mosque.
No self deception.
No surrender.

The time to take a stand is now -- at this site, on this issue.

No. 4 asks for religion, which says “Islam.”  Then “address of student,” then “Transferred from which school?” and “grade,” and it says “Kindergarten”…I can’t read the name, so apparently this must have been for when he was in first grade, because it says “Transferee from a kindergarten.”  Then No. 7 says “Accepted at this school on the date,” which is “1/1/1968,” I believe, which means he would have been six and a half years old.

Why I'm Not Hiring

When you add it all up, it costs $74,000 to put $44,000 in Sally's pocket and to give her $12,000 in benefits.

With unemployment just under 10% and companies sitting on their cash, you would think that sooner or later job growth would take off. I think it's going to be later�much later. Here's why.

      Meet Sally (not her real name; details changed to preserve privacy). Sally is a terrific employee, and she happens to be the median person in terms of base pay among the 83 people at my little company in New Jersey, where we provide audio systems for use in educational, commercial and industrial settings. She's been with us for over 15 years. She's a high school graduate with some specialized training. She makes $59,000 a year - on paper.  In reality, she makes only $44,000 a year because $15,000 is taken from her thanks to various deductions and taxes, all of which form the steep, sad slope between gross and net pay.

      Daniel Henninger discusses how Robert Rubin and Alan Greenspan agree that Americans should send more of their paychecks to Washington.    

      Also, Fannie and Freddie ask for more cash within weeks of an Obama pledge to end taxpayer rescues.

      Before that money hits her bank, it is reduced by the $2,376 she pays as her share of the medical and dental insurance that my company provides. And then the government takes its due. She pays $126 for state unemployment insurance, $149 for disability insurance and $856 for Medicare. That's the small stuff. New Jersey takes $1,893 in income taxes. The federal government gets $3,661 for Social Security and another $6,250 for income tax withholding. The roughly $13,000 taken from her by various government entities means that some 22% of her gross pay goes to Washington or Trenton. She's lucky she doesn't live in New York City, where the toll would be even higher.

      Employing Sally costs plenty too. My company has to write checks for $74,000 so Sally can receive her nominal $59,000 in base pay. Health insurance is a big, added cost: While Sally pays nearly $2,400 for coverage, my company pays the rest - $9,561 for employee/spouse medical and dental. We also provide company-paid life and other insurance premiums amounting to $153. Altogether, company-paid benefits add $9,714 to the cost of employing Sally.

      Then the federal and state governments want a little something extra. They take $56 for federal unemployment coverage, $149 for disability insurance, $300 for workers' comp and $505 for state unemployment insurance. Finally, the feds make me pay $856 for Sally's Medicare and $3,661 for her Social Security.

      When you add it all up, it costs $74,000 to put $44,000 in Sally's pocket and to give her $12,000 in benefits. Bottom line: Governments impose a 33% surtax on Sally's job each year.

      Because my company has been conscripted by the government and forced to serve as a tax collector, we have lost control of a big chunk of our cost structure. Tax increases, whether cloaked as changes in unemployment or disability insurance, Medicare increases or in any other form can dramatically alter our financial situation. With government spending and deficits growing as fast as they have been, you know that more tax increases are coming - for my company, and even for Sally too.

      Companies have also been pressed into serving as providers of health insurance. In a saner world, health insurance would be something that individuals buy for themselves and their families, just as they do with auto insurance. Now, adding to the insanity, there is ObamaCare.

Every year, we negotiate a renewal to our health coverage. This year, our provider demanded a 28% increase in premiums - for a lesser plan. This is in part a tax increase that the federal government has co-opted insurance providers to collect. We had never faced an increase anywhere near this large; in each of the last two years, the increase was under 10%.

      To offset tax increases and steepening rises in health-insurance premiums, my company needs sustainably higher profits and sales - something unlikely in this "summer of recovery." We can't pass the additional costs onto our customers, because the market is too tight and we'd lose sales. Only governments can raise prices repeatedly and pretend there will be no consequences.

      And even if the economic outlook were more encouraging, increasing revenues is always uncertain and expensive. As much as I might want to hire new salespeople, engineers and marketing staff in an effort to grow, I would be increasing my company's vulnerability to government decisions to raise taxes, to policies that make health insurance more expensive, and to the difficulties of this economic environment.

      A life in business is filled with uncertainties, but I can be quite sure that every time I hire someone my obligations to the government go up. From where I sit, the government's message is unmistakable: Creating a new job carries a punishing price.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Just as President Barack Obama returns to the campaign trail, a new poll shows rising uncertainty among Americans that he is a Christian.


The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that a growing number of Americans say they don’t know Obama’s religion, which is Christian. A shrinking number identify him as a Christian, and a small but growing minority believe he is a Muslim.


The findings, along with Wednesday’s Gallup tracking poll that showed Mr. Obama’s approval rating falling to 41%, underscores the liabilities the president carries as he picks up the pace of his efforts to save the Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. The sense of “otherness” – that Obama was not connecting to ordinary Americans – dogged his presidential campaign, as questions and conspiracies swirled around his religion, his birthplace and his political associates.


“People have told us consistently they want religious politicians,” said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, which conducted the poll of more than 3,000 Americans between July 21 and Aug. 5, before the blow-up over the proposed mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero. “I think it’s an important element of how people see him, how he’s viewed personally.”


The Pew Center found that 34% of those polled said Obama is a Christian, down from 48% in March 2009, and 51% in October 2008, just before his election victory.


Eighteen percent said he is a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009. And 43% said they didn’t know what religion he was, up from 34% in March 2009.


“Do you happen to know what Barack Obama’s religion is?’’ the survey asked. “Is he Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, agnostic, or something else?’’ The poll carried a margin of sampling error of 2.5 percentage points.


The percentage saying the president is Muslim is perhaps the least politically concerning, Kohut said. That group tracks closely with self-identified, conservative Republicans and Obama opponents. Thirty-four percent of conservative Republicans say the president is Muslim, up 16 percentage points since March 2009. Thirty-one percent of all Republicans say Mr. Obama is a Muslim, up 14 percentage points from March 2009.


The rising numbers of Americans who say they don’t know his religion – and the falling numbers who say he’s Christian – represent a much broader swath of the electorate. Last year, half of white Americans said Obama was Christian. Now it’s 35%. Last year, 56% of African Americans said he was Christian. Now, 43% do.


A White House official said the president’s political team is “operating in a very challenging environment where lies and misinformation have potential to take hold.” Americans are always more engaged during campaigns then afterward, he said, explaining the rising doubts about Obama’s religion. And he cautioned against putting too much stock in one poll, although he acknowledged Pew’s nonpartisan reputation.


In the latest Gallup tracking poll, 41% of respondents approved of Obama’s job performance, and 52% disapproved.


The White House is trying to re-engage Obama with voters, mixing high-priced fund-raisers with more homey events. Before fundraisers for Sen. Patty Murray in Seattle on Tuesday, the president huddled with small-business people at a bakery.


In Columbus on Wednesday, before a fund-raiser for Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, the president sat around the kitchen table of Rhonda and Joe Weithman, and their two children, Rachel, 9-years-old, and Josh, 11, discussing their economic travails.


He then held a roundtable discussion in the Weithmans’ sun-drenched back lawn with about 35 friends and neighbors sitting around picnic tables, the shingled home as a backdrop.


“This is a wonderful way of seeing who this person is as a real person,” Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, a candidate for U.S. Senate, said after the event. He blamed doubts about the president’s personal qualities on conservative television commentators “who pretend to be news people, trying to foist their opinions.”

CNN retracts accusations that Col. Lakin is a "racist" and "freak"

CNN, which became one of the first mainstream networks to put the absence of publicly available documentation for Barack Obama's presidential eligibility in prime time, has issued a retraction for publicly calling an officer challenging Obama's eligibility "racist." The original accusation and the retraction both came from one of the "experts" CNN offered on the case of Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin, who faces a court-martial in a few weeks for refusing to deploy because the president refused to document his eligibility to be commander-in-chief. An initial combative interview with Lakin was done by CNN's Anderson Cooper, who portrayed Lakin negatively. It was a followup shortly later by CNN's Jeffrey Toobin in which the problems arose. Cooper mentioned Lakin had served "honorably" in his 18-year career. Toobin then launched a rant. "You know, these people are bigots, they're racists, they're freaks, they're lunatics, these are not rational players in American politics," he said on air.

Most of the dialogue on national immigration policy, understandably, is focused on direct federal government policy making; that is, when Congress passes a law or votes appropriations, when the executive makes policies within the law, and when the judiciary interprets the law. But there is another aspect of national policy making in which the U.S. government hands off migration decision making to some other entity, such as to a huge international organization like the World Trade Organization (WTO), or to a tiny government, such as that of American Samoa. These arrangements should concern all low-migration advocates, particularly since the mass migration people are proposing commissions to help make immigration policy.
