Medical care in the United States is derided as miserable compared to health care systems in the rest of the developed world. Economists, government officials, insurers and academics alike are beating the drum for a far larger government rôle in health care. Much of the public assumes their arguments are sound because the calls for change are so ubiquitous and the topic so complex. However, before turning to government as the solution, some unheralded facts about America's health care system should be considered.
Fact No. 1: Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers.[1] Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Prostate cancer mortality is 604 percent higher in the U.K. and 457 percent higher in Norway. The mortality rate for colorectal cancer among British men and women is about 40 percent higher.
Fact No. 2: Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians.[2] Breast cancer mortality is 9 percent higher, prostate cancer is 184 percent higher and colon cancer mortality among men is about 10 percent higher than in the United States.
Fact No. 3: Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries.[3] Some 56 percent of Americans who could benefit are taking statins, which reduce cholesterol and protect against heart disease. By comparison, of those patients who could benefit from these drugs, only 36 percent of the Dutch, 29 percent of the Swiss, 26 percent of Germans, 23 percent of Britons and 17 percent of Italians receive them.
Fact No. 4: Americans have better access to preventive cancer screening than Canadians.[4] Take the proportion of the appropriate-age population groups who have received recommended tests for breast, cervical, prostate and colon cancer:
Nine of 10 middle-aged American women (89 percent) have had a mammogram, compared to less than three-fourths of Canadians (72 percent).
Nearly all American women (96 percent) have had a pap smear, compared to less than 90 percent of Canadians.
More than half of American men (54 percent) have had a PSA test, compared to less than 1 in 6 Canadians (16 percent).
Nearly one-third of Americans (30 percent) have had a colonoscopy, compared with less than 1 in 20 Canadians (5 percent).
Fact No. 5: Lower income Americans are in better health than comparable Canadians. Twice as many American seniors with below-median incomes self-report "excellent" health compared to Canadian seniors (11.7 percent versus 5.8 percent). Conversely, white Canadian young adults with below-median incomes are 20 percent more likely than lower income Americans to describe their health as "fair or poor."[5]
Fact No. 6: Americans spend less time waiting for care than patients in Canada and the U.K. Canadian and British patients wait about twice as long - sometimes more than a year - to see a specialist, to have elective surgery like hip replacements or to get radiation treatment for cancer.[6] All told, 827,429 people are waiting for some type of procedure in Canada.[7] In England, nearly 1.8 million people are waiting for a hospital admission or outpatient treatment.[8]
Fact No. 7: People in countries with more government control of health care are highly dissatisfied and believe reform is needed. More than 70 percent of German, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and British adults say their health system needs either "fundamental change" or "complete rebuilding."[9]
Fact No. 8: Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians. When asked about their own health care instead of the "health care system," more than half of Americans (51.3 percent) are very satisfied with their health care services, compared to only 41.5 percent of Canadians; a lower proportion of Americans are dissatisfied (6.8 percent) than Canadians (8.5 percent).[10]
Fact No. 9: Americans have much better access to important new technologies like medical imaging than patients in Canada or the U.K. Maligned as a waste by economists and policymakers naïve to actual medical practice, an overwhelming majority of leading American physicians identified computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the most important medical innovations for improving patient care during the previous decade.[11] [See the table.] The United States has 34 CT scanners per million Americans, compared to 12 in Canada and eight in Britain. The United States has nearly 27 MRI machines per million compared to about 6 per million in Canada and Britain.[12]
Fact No. 10: Americans are responsible for the vast majority of all health care innovations.[13] The top five U.S. hospitals conduct more clinical trials than all the hospitals in any other single developed country.[14] Since the mid-1970s, the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology has gone to American residents more often than recipients from all other countries combined.[15] In only five of the past 34 years did a scientist living in America not win or share in the prize. Most important recent medical innovations were developed in the United States.[16] [See the table.]
Conclusion. Despite serious challenges, such as escalating costs and the uninsured, the U.S. health care system compares favorably to those in other developed countries.

We are advised that moderation - being lukewarm - in all things is somehow desirable. I beg to differ. In today's political terms, the word signifies nothing less than waffling - seeking a mythical middle ground between right and wrong.

It is a popular concept in today's political world - widely praised by a corrupt mainstream media that long ago abandoned the principle of morality which holds that some things are inherently evil by their very nature while others are by their nature good.
In the eyes of the media, those who term themselves moderates are preferable to those whose views are considered extreme, or in other words immoderate in that they clearly chose right over wrong. If you accept the truth that killing an unborn human being in its mother's womb is nothing less than callous homicide you have abandoned the moderate position that the right of choice strictly inures to the mother who is here and now and visible rather than to the infant in her womb who can been seen only by ultrasound and whose continued existence remains a matter to be decided by an society enlightened by its worship of convenience.

Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla has ordered an investigation into the Environmental Protection Agency's alleged suppression of a 98-page report, co-authored by EPA analyst Alan Carlin that questioned the science behind global warming.
The report details how regulating gases like carbon dioxide WILL NOT reduce global warming. Carlin's report states that the information the EPA is using is out of date, and that even as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have increased, global temperatures have declined.
Inhofe said "He (Carlin) came out with the truth. They don't want the truth at the EPA," he's ordered an investigation. "We're going to expose it."

Health care legislation back behind closed doors

WASHINGTON (AP) - Health care talks slip back behind closed doors Wednesday as Senate leaders start trying to merge two very different bills into a new version that can get the 60 votes needed to guarantee its passage.
All eyes are on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, who has said he wants to complete the wedding quickly and get historic health care overhaul legislation onto the floor the week after next. Both bills were written by Democrats, but that's not going to make it easier for Reid. They share a common goal, which is to provide all Americans with access to affordable health insurance, but they differ on how to accomplish it.
The Finance Committee bill that was approved Tuesday has no government-sponsored insurance plan and no requirement on employers that they must offer coverage. It relies instead on a requirement that all Americans obtain insurance.
Sen. Olympia Snowe, the only committee Republican who supported advancing the Finance panel bill, suggested Wednesday a scenario in which a government-run plan could eventually come into play.
Snowe told CBS's "The Early Show" that she believes a public option would give the government "a disproportionate advantage" over private insurers, and said she still opposes the concept.
But at the same time, Snowe said that she wants "to make sure the insurance industry performs." In a separate interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," she said that if the industry did not live up to congressional expectations for more widely affordable and accessible insurance, "you could have the public option kick in immediately."
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee bill, passed earlier by a panel in which liberals predominate, calls for both a government plan to compete with private insurers and a mandate that employers help cover their workers. Those are only two of dozens of differences.
President Barack Obama acknowledges it's not going to be easy. Speaking Tuesday in the Rose Garden, Obama called the 14-9 Finance Committee vote "a critical milestone" toward getting a health care overhaul this year. The legislation won its first Republican support when Snowe broke ranks with her party, saying she was answering the call of history.
Obama wasn't ready to bask in the bipartisan glow.
"Now is not the time to pat ourselves on the back," he said. "Now is the time to dig in and work even harder."
There was no victory lap either for Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus of Montana. "The bottom line here is we need a final bill, a merged bill, that gets 60 votes," he said. "Our goal is to pass health care reform, not just talk about it."
Aides say Reid has a keen sense of what the Senate will pass and he is focused on finding a solution that can get the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster.
In general, bills moving toward floor votes in both houses would require most Americans to purchase insurance, provide federal subsidies to help those of lower incomes afford coverage and give small businesses help in defraying the cost of coverage for their workers.
The measures would bar insurance companies from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions and for the first time limit their ability to charge higher premiums on the basis of age or family size. Expanded coverage would be paid for by cutting hundreds of billions of dollars from future Medicare payments to health care providers. Each house also envisions higher taxes - an income tax surcharge on million-dollar wage-earners in the case of the House, and a new excise levy on insurance companies selling high-cost policies in the Senate Finance Committee bill.
Apart from Snowe, Finance Committee Republicans cited higher taxes, a greater federal role in the insurance industry and other concerns as they lined up to oppose the bill.
Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said the legislation would place the nation on a "slippery slope to more and more government control of health care."
Snowe said there were problems with the bill but the risks of doing nothing were too great.
Across the Capitol, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her lieutenants have been at work for weeks trying to blend legislation approved by three House committees. The eventual result is certain to include a government option, but the details of the plan have split the rank and file and leaders have spent days struggling with the issue.

The president of the National Council of La Raza, America's largest Hispanic advocacy organization, said healthcare reform should include "everyone" — including illegal aliens.
Speaking at a press conference in support of President Barack Obama's efforts to overhaul the healthcare system, La Raza President Janet Murguia said:
"From our perspective there's a strong case to be made in this country for us to reform healthcare," and "it ought to include everyone.
"We know that politically it's very difficult right now to take on the issue of undocumenteds [but] there's no reason why we shouldn't be trying to cover as many people as possible, certainly when it comes to undocumented children. Our goal should be to have healthcare for everyone."
Murguia told CNSNews: "In terms of fairness and cost efficiencies, I think it's in the interest of healthcare reform to have access to as many people as possible."
Language inserted in the healthcare reform legislation would make federal health insurance subsidies available only to U.S. citizens and legal residents. But the House and Senate bills do not contain a clear provision for verifying citizenship status.
Rep. Michael Honda, a California Democrat, said undocumented aliens, "if they can afford it, should be able to buy their own private plans. It keeps them out of the emergency room."
Rep. Honda and other Democrats who support his position say that the illegals should be able to buy insurance "even if it comes through a government-established exchange," the Washington Times reported.
But Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican, declared: "If anyone can, with a straight face, advocate that we should provide health insurance for people who broke into our country, broke our laws and for the most part are criminals, I don't know where they ever would draw the line."

Individuals & business owners can be fined for not having insurance, taxes will climb, alternative taxes are in the works, e.g. VAT, doesn't add cross-state lines purchasing of insurance, doesn't eliminate mandates, does cut Medicare, will ration care, will raise costs to all incomes, excempts Congress, doesn't prohibit abortion, guts Medicare Advantage, will cover illegal aliens (under equal protection), adds millions to medical roles without additional doctors, reduces payments to doctors, and will, ultimately, become mandatory then like Medicare now if you want to retain private coverage insurers won't reduce your payments but they'll not have to pay upwards of 80% making the government your 'prime' carrier, and o'robin hood's socialist scheme will ballon the deficit and overall national debt (which now is around $107 Trillion, exceeding the total GDP of the entire world!) -- rfh

"The Senate Finance Committee is expected to take a final vote to report out its bill on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) is at work supervising negotiations to combine it with the bill reported out of the Senate Health, Education and Labor Committee last July .
The Senate Finance Committee bill contains important elements that would greatly impact the ability of patients to receive unrationed medical care. And there are other places in the bill where the Secretary of Health and Human Services is given discretion to regulate the treatment that healthcare providers can give to their patients.
The bill does contain language to prevent the use of comparative effectiveness analysis in a manner that would discriminatorily deny treatment because of age, disability, or terminal illness[1]; however, this provision would not affect the financial incentive to ration care as described below. The bill's funding partially comes from by a means that would keep up with what Americans spend on health care; however, half of the funding comes from cuts in Medicare spending[2] that would result in rationing life-saving treatment for senior citizens.
One particularly dangerous provision penalizes doctors based on how much medical treatment they direct for senior citizens on Medicare. It establishes that for at least five years, beginning in 2014, Medicare physicians who authorize treatments for their patients that wind up in the top 10% of per capita cost for a year will lose 5% of their total Medicare reimbursements for that year. We must demand our legislators read the health care bills! How could they even consider voting on a proposed law that could radically change health care in America without reading it first? Have they forgotten that they work for us?
Calling the language in the current health care bill "arcane", "confusing", "hard to understand", and "incomprehensible", Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) admitted to CNSNews.com that he wasn't going to read the actual legislative language because he finds it "one of the more confusing things I have ever read in my life."
