During his tenure in the United States Senate, Barack Obama co-sponsored the 2007 Senate version of the Freedom of Choice Act (S. 1173). Responding to a question regarding [abortion] in a speech given to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund on July 17, 2007, Obama declared, "The first thing I'd do, as president, is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That's the first thing that I'd do."

Life and Death - Help Defeat the abortion "health" bill (Remember in November!)
Congress wants to force you to pay for abortions!
In so doing it has thumbed its nose at you and the majority of your fellow Americans.
Fortunately, this fight is far from over. But in order for you to protect the youngest members of our human family from those anti-life extremists who seek to destroy them, you need to:
Don't take my word for it. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Chairman of the US Bishops' Committee on Pro-life Activities, said that there is a "fundamental problem" with the Senate's Christmas Eve version of "health care reform":
The editors of National Review Online went even further and issued this analysis:
Add to this the fact that you and your fellow taxpayers oppose public funding of abortion by a three-to-one margin, and our mission becomes crystal clear:
Unless the people of life rise up as one and defend the youngest members of our human life, they will continue to be slaughtered ... willfully, brutally and ruthlessly!
And thanks to radical pro-abortion extremists in Congress ...
... you will be forced to pay for the abortions that kill them!
You simply cannot sit back and allow that to happen. God has placed you here at this precise moment in history for a reason. And that reason is to protect His innocent unborn children ... no matter the personal cost to yourself.
After all, you recognize the sanctity and dignity of the human person from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. If you are unwilling to fight for the unborn, who will?
So now that God is calling you to give of yourself for the sake of the youngest members of our human family, your response must be that of the prophet Isaiah's when he said to God:
And if we all work together and give our all, then I am confident that we will, according to God's divine plan, win VICTORY over abortion.
And Priests for Life is going to do everything in our power to help make that happen.
Even as you read this letter, we are busy finalizing our plans on how we will promote the Church's teachings on political responsibility in the coming months!
Those plans received a real shot in the arm recently when we received a letter from the IRS which, in a nutshell, gave us a clean bill of health and confirmed what we already knew; namely, that Priests for Life's work in the political arena is in total compliance with IRS guidelines.
The second priority is our "Freedom Ride" initiative. This historic project goes hand-in-hand with all of our work dealing with political responsibility because it is designed to ignite the pro-life embers that lie smoldering within our fellow Americans ... and most especially our African-American brothers and sisters.
As I believe you know, the first "Freedom Ride" bus is schedule to hit the road in the Spring.
In order for that to happen, however, there are a lot of details still to be worked out ... and a lot of financial obligations that have to be met.
Again, it's going to take you and all of our Priests for Life family members to provide the dollars that will keep our "Freedom Ride" project on track and make it the success it needs to be.
But that's far from all Priests for Life will be doing this year.
In addition to those two top priorities, it is more important than ever that we continue to preach the Gospel of Life to our fellow Americans and work to bring more of them into our pro-life movement. Right now we are reaching literally TENS OF MILLIONS of Americans through ...
- Television: Mother Angelica's EWTN network ... Sky Angel with our "Gospel of Life" show ... guest appearances on cable and satellite news programs.
- Radio: We're on numerous Catholic and Christian stations ... and secular talk radio, too.
- Internet: Hundreds of thousands of people visit our website www.priestsforlife.org every month. They do because our site is jam-packed with the latest pro-life news and information. It is critically important that grow and expand this part of our ministry.
- Email: Instant communication with tens of thousands of pro-life activists alerting them to attacks on the unborn and providing them with actions they can take to fight abortion.
- Teleconferences: Key strategy sessions with pro-life leaders and activists. Thousands of people take part in these teleconferences at a time!
- Publications: My bi-weekly pro-life column ... editorials ... blog postings.
- YouTube and Facebook: We are taking the Gospel of Life to those Internet sites that young people visit. Literally millions of people watched the "Is This What You Mean?" videos we posted on YouTube.
- Pro-life conferences: Members of our pastoral team are constantly on the road giving pro-life talks and rallying the people of life to take to the streets
- Churches: Liturgical resources ... newsletter to priests ... parish visits ... work with the clergy of Protestant denominations ... and much, much more!
Please continue to PRAY for me and everyone here at Priests for Life. As I mentioned at the very beginning of my letter, 2010 is going to be an extremely difficult one for us. Pro-abortion extremists control the powers of government and they are intent on using their power to further cement abortion-on-demand as the law of the land.
Although everyone here at Priests for Life relies on your prayers to sustain us, no one relies on them more than I do. So please continue to pray for me and Priests for Life.
And know that we pray to God for you, too. Because you are such a blessing to us and to the unborn, in grateful thanksgiving for the sacrifices you make on their behalf, I and all the priests of Priests for Life - Fr. Wilde, Fr. West, Fr. Quinn, Fr. Daniels, and Fr. Salom?n - remember you at each Mass we offer.
Thank you again for your dedication, your commitment and your perseverance. You are an inspiration to me and every member of our hard-working Priests for Life staff. God bless.
And if I may ask you one more favor. Each year I survey our supporters to learn how we can serve their needs more effectively. After giving your donation, would you take a moment and fill out the short survey I've placed at www.priestsforlife.org/survey. It is very important to me to know what you're thinking about our ministry!
Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Frank Pavone
National Director, Priests For Life and Gospel of Life MinistriesPS I know I've mentioned this to you before, but it bears repeating. Should you ever begin to grow weary in our fight to end abortion, call to mind these words which the late Congressman Henry Hyde said. They will serve as a powerful motivator for you, as they do for me:
"When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I've often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, 'Spare him because he loved us.' And God will look at you and say not, 'Did you succeed?', but 'Did you try?'."
Without question you are working hard to end abortion and save the lives of countless numbers of innocent babies. You are trying and giving your all. And because of that, when you stand before the throne of Almighty God, a throng of white-clad innocents will cry out on your behalf. With that comforting thought in mind ...

o'bow - Palin Slams Obama for Bowing, Breaking Promises
![]() |
On tour promoting her best-selling book, "Going Rogue: An American Life," the former Alaska governor also told Newsmax she was so embarrassed by a Newsweek magazine cover depicting her in running shorts that she sent an e-mail to her family saying "I almost feel like I have to apologize."
Palin cited the contrast between Obama's comportment in bowing to Japanese royalty and the leadership style of former President Ronald Reagan. "There is where his steel spine strengthened our entire nation," she said of the Republican icon. "The leadership he provided, where he allowed us to believe in ourselves as a superpower — not in an abusive way as a superpower, but as a power and a light and a hope for the rest of the world.
"That allowed us to be a healthier, safer, and more generous nation to help other nations. So those things that Ronald Reagan did . . . he said on national security issues, he said you know: 'We win. They lose.' Leadership like that we need today. [It] allows a very clear path in front of us we'd be foolish not to follow."
In criticizing the bow, Palin underscored the distinction between Reagan's view of American exceptionalism and President Obama's efforts to cast America as but one member of the community of nations.
"That [bow] made me and many of us uncomfortable, and I don't think it was just an accidental breach of protocol, because we've seen it before with one of the Saudi leaders, too," Palin told Newsmax. "I think it goes along with that same mode of operation that was apologizing for who America is. In order to build relationships with other countries and strengthen our allies and allow more alliances across the globe, we don't need to apologize for who we are. In fact, I think we would be respected to an even greater degree if we exerted more of the diplomatic power that, again, Ronald Reagan did."
Palin, who was a lightning rod for criticism during the presidential campaign, warned that America is in "a dangerous place economically" because Congress is debating healthcare reforms that would affect up to one-sixth of the U.S. economy, without keeping the public informed about exactly what provisions are being proposed. And she doesn't think that void of information is accidental, either.
"There are so many questions right now that I'm like every other American," Palin told Newsmax, "just kind of scratching my head saying, 'When are we going to get the answers so that we can debate this very responsibly and very intelligently?'
"I think it's purposeful that some in Washington, D.C., don't want us to have all of the answers, so that the debate is more nebulous and puts more of the generalities out there. Even knowing what we do know about it though, I think it is a very dangerous place for Americans to be, to be told that the only solutions to the healthcare challenges in our country . . . is that government has to take it over."
Palin, whose book was a runaway best-seller before it was even released, charged that Obama has broken his promise to take a transparent, bipartisan approach to governance.
She noted the efforts of GOP Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and others in Congress: "They're saying, 'Hey, we've got some common-sense conservative solutions that we've put forth and were shut out of the discussions.
"That's a broken promise of Obama's and others in Congress, who promised an open, transparent, bipartisan approach to finding these solutions, and that's unfortunate. But these common-sense conservatives have put forth solutions suggesting the intra- and interstate competition amongst healthcare providers, and the tort reform, and the waste and fraud measures that can help address the rising cost problems right now.
"Those things aren't even being considered in the bills pending before Congress. Very frustrating for a lot of us as Americans, saying wait a minute, this isn't what we've bargained for."
Palin also gave Newsmax a behind-the-scenes account of her candid reaction after she saw the controversial, critical Newsweek cover story, which she has criticized as "out of context" and "sexist." The magazine took an image of Palin posing in short running shorts, which she did for Runners World magazine to promote the benefits of exercise, and splashed it on its recent cover. Palin told Newsmax she was mortified.
"I fired off an e-mail to my daughters, to my sisters and my mom, and I said you know I almost feel like I have to apologize for some of these surprises that happen in our lives here," she told Newsmax. "I don't know why I felt like I had to apologize because I didn't do anything wrong with it, but I didn't like it. But it was a bit of a shot there by Newsweek that I thought was unnecessary and I didn't like it."
Asked why some journalists in the mainstream media have attacked her, she responded: "Maybe some people are really threatened by just a normal everyday average American who is very blessed to have a megaphone right now, and doesn't want to squander or blow this opportunity to get a common-sense conservative message out there heard across the nation. I'm very blessed to have the opportunities that I have in speaking up for normal Americans."
Palin predicted that, in the 2010 mid-term elections, Americans will look back at what Reagan did for the country and vote against big-spending incumbents.

Obama Spokesman Falsely Claims Hyde Amendment Stops Abortion in Health Care
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- White House spokesman Robert Gibbs mislead reporters today during his afternoon press briefing with a false claim that the Hyde amendment would prohibit taxpayer-funding of abortions in the Congressional health care bills. However, the long-standing law does not apply to the legislation. CNS News reporter Fred Lucas asked Gibbs, the top spokesman for President Barack Obama, about a letter the Catholic bishops recently sent Congress pointing out that each of the current health care bills includes abortion subsidies. "In a letter to senators last week the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said that, I'm quoting, 'So far the health-reform bills considered in committee, including the new Senate Finance Committee bill, have not met the president's challenge of barring the use of federal dollars for abortion,'" Lucas said. "Is that statement wrong?" Gibbs replied, "Well, I don't want to get me into trouble at church, but I would mention there's a law that precludes the use of federal funds for abortion. That isn't going to be changed in these health care bills." "There have been several amendments that would explicitly bar [federal funding for] abortions that were rejected," Lucas responded. Gibbs replied, "Again, there's a fairly well-documented federal law that prevents it." However, the fairly well-documented federal law is the Hyde amendment and it only applies to the Medicaid program that provides health care funds for poor Americans. Full story at LifeNews.com
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- With October as breast cancer awareness month, Komen for the Cure is sponsoring races and events across the country to raise awareness of the potentially fatal disease. However, Komen isn't providing women with information on a way to help prevent breast cancer by not having an abortion. Although abortion advocates, and Komen, dismiss the research, experts have clearly shown an abortion-breast cancer link. The upshot? Having an abortion increases a woman's risk of having breast cancer while carrying a pregnancy to term lowers it. A July study done on women in Turkey who had abortions found a 66 percent increased risk of contracting breast cancer as a result. Dr. Vahit Ozmen and his colleagues at the Istanbul Medical Faculty at Istanbul University and Magee-Women's hospital in Pittsburgh conducted the new retrospective study. They published their findings in the April 2009 issue of the World Journal of Surgical Oncology and examined women who, between January 2000 and December 2006, were admitted to clinics of Istanbul Medical Faculty for examination. The researchers said that their findings showed abortion was "significantly associated with increased breast cancer risk." Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In recent weeks and months there has been some controversy about whether members of Congress will actually read the pro-abortion health care bills they are considering. Yesterday, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs gave a telling answer about whether the president has read them. "I was just wondering, before the President signs it will he himself read it or rely on staff to read the text of the bill?" a reporter asked during Monday's press briefing. "Well, I think he's read a decent part of the legislation that's been bandied around right now," Gibbs responded. The comment comes after Gibbs joked about Obama reading the bill when he was asked a similar question in August. "I don't know what his vacation plans are currently," said Gibbs at the time. Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new report from a Planned Parenthood watchdog group finds the abortion business used underage girls in at least 10 clinical trials over the last two decades to push abortion, birth control, and STD testing. The news comes at a time when Planned Parenthood is facing criticism for videos showing it ignoring potential statutory abuse cases. Jim Sedlak, vice president of American Life League and the head of its STOPP Planned Parenthood effort, released the details in a statement to LifeNews.com. Twenty-eight Planned Parenthood affiliates have been involved in 33 clinical trials, some of which received government funds, and 10 of them involved girls as young as 13 years of age. That number represents one-third of all clinical trials surveyed in the STOPP report. Two of the 33 trials ended in the 1990s, while the remaining 31 were conducted within the last seven years and some of them are ongoing. Full story at LifeNews.com
Riverside, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A third woman in as many weeks was recently rushed to a local hospital from a southern California Planned Parenthood abortion center after an apparent botched abortion required urgent medical care. The latest incident occurred on Saturday morning and was photographed by local pro-life advocates. Two women were hospitalized in recent weeks from a Planned Parenthood center in Orange, California after alleged botched abortions. In this new incident, local pro-life advocates say a fire truck arrived at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Riverside, California, followed by an ambulance with lights on and sirens blaring. Witnesses observed a female patient taken from the building on a gurney. She was loaded into the awaiting ambulance, which sped away without the use of lights or sirens. Operation Rescue president Troy Newman, who has been in contact with the pro-life advocates in southern California, says the woman's condition is unknown. Polling Data Sparks National Protest Against Tax-Funded Abortions in Health Care
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Several pro-life groups are sponsoring a new grassroots campaign called "I Am 71" to draw attention to the taxpayer-funding of abortions found in the various health care bills in Congress. The campaign is meant to highlight a Zogby poll showing 71 percent of Americans don't want tax-funded abortions. The 71 percent number comes from a poll conducted by Zogby International and The O'Leary Report in December 2008. The poll surveyed 2,481 American voters and had a margin-of-error of plus-or-minus two percentage points. It asked: "President-elect Obama has proposed a bill that would force many employers to provide health insurance to their employees. Do you believe that this bill should also require insurance plans to pay for abortions when the abortions are performed as a method of birth control?" A strong majority of Americans -- 71 percent -- said abortion coverage should not be included in such a bill, while only 20 percent said yes to abortion coverage. Seventy percent of Independent voters said no, as did a majority of Democratic voters, 53 percent. Even 53 percent of those who voted for President Obama just one month prior to the poll being conducted said no to abortion coverage. Full story at LifeNews.com
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The Catholic "Red Mass" is a tradition for members of the Supreme Court on the Sunday before they open their session every October. Six justices found a way to attend the event -- and Justice Clarence Thomas would have come if not for a wedding -- but not pro-abortion Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Red Mass has been celebrated since 1953 at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington. Named for the red vestments the celebrants wear, the service is meant to invoke guidance from God for the jurists to make good decisions. Ginsburg once attended the traditional event but quit going to it because of abortion. She once confessed to author Abigail Pogrebin in her mid-2000s book "Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish" that she no longer attends because she doesn't want to be reminded of how she supports abortion. "Before every session, there's a Red Mass," Ginsburg said. "And the justices get invitations from the cardinal to attend that. And a good number of the justices show up every year. I went one year, and I will never go again, because this sermon was outrageously anti-abortion." Full story at LifeNews.comby Mailee Smith
On the heels of recent surveys demonstrating that a majority of Americans are increasingly identifying themselves as pro-life, the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed a lower court's decision muzzling the free speech rights of pro-life citizens in Illinois to stand. The State of Illinois has done nothing less than censor its pro-life citizens. Despite the fact that almost half of the states in the nation offer "Choose Life" license plates -- with another 14 states working on them -- the people of Illinois have been silenced. The case was Choose Life Illinois v. White. Even after Choose Life Illinois submitted over 25,000 names on its petition for "Choose Life" plates and complied with every written guideline provided in Illinois law, Secretary of State Jessie White said that he had no authority to issue the plates, claiming instead that the authority rested with the legislature alone. An interesting claim -- since the Illinois statute said no such thing. In fact, during the course of litigation, the Illinois legislature amended the applicable law to include a role for the legislature. In other words, the legislature saw that there was a hole in White's claims, and they "patched it up" for him. Full story at LifeNews.com
Geneva, Switzerland (LifeNews.com) -- The United Nations Human Rights Council has backed, and the administration of pro-abortion President Barack Obama opposed, a measure seen as backing down on abortion. Pat Buckley, who lobbies for the British pro-life group SPUC sees the measure as a positive development. The United Nations has long had a pro-abortion posture and gone as far as pressuring some nations to legalize or expand abortions. However, the Human Rights Council has backed a Russian resolution promoting traditional values that could be a way for the pro-life movement to advance its perspective on abortion. "In a rare break from its long term strategy of attempting to dictate newly-conceived so called 'rights' on everyone - such as the manufactured 'right to abortion' - the UN Human Rights Council has approved a resolution tabled by the Russian Federation," Buckley explained.
