o'scamcare - Inconvenient Truths: 10 Facts about American Health Care

reposted from http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba649 (National Center for Policy Analysis, NCPA)
Tuesday, March 24, 2009 by Scott Atlas

Medical care in the United States is derided as miserable compared to health care systems in the rest of the developed world. Economists, government officials, insurers and academics alike are beating the drum for a far larger government rôle in health care. Much of the public assumes their arguments are sound because the calls for change are so ubiquitous and the topic so complex. However, before turning to government as the solution, some unheralded facts about America's health care system should be considered.

Fact No. 1: Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers.[1] Breast cancer mortality is 52 percent higher in Germany than in the United States, and 88 percent higher in the United Kingdom. Prostate cancer mortality is 604 percent higher in the U.K. and 457 percent higher in Norway. The mortality rate for colorectal cancer among British men and women is about 40 percent higher.

Fact No. 2: Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians.[2] Breast cancer mortality is 9 percent higher, prostate cancer is 184 percent higher and colon cancer mortality among men is about 10 percent higher than in the United States.

Fact No. 3: Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries.[3] Some 56 percent of Americans who could benefit are taking statins, which reduce cholesterol and protect against heart disease. By comparison, of those patients who could benefit from these drugs, only 36 percent of the Dutch, 29 percent of the Swiss, 26 percent of Germans, 23 percent of Britons and 17 percent of Italians receive them.

Fact No. 4: Americans have better access to preventive cancer screening than Canadians.[4] Take the proportion of the appropriate-age population groups who have received recommended tests for breast, cervical, prostate and colon cancer:

Nine of 10 middle-aged American women (89 percent) have had a mammogram, compared to less than three-fourths of Canadians (72 percent).
Nearly all American women (96 percent) have had a pap smear, compared to less than 90 percent of Canadians.
More than half of American men (54 percent) have had a PSA test, compared to less than 1 in 6 Canadians (16 percent).
Nearly one-third of Americans (30 percent) have had a colonoscopy, compared with less than 1 in 20 Canadians (5 percent).

Fact No. 5: Lower income Americans are in better health than comparable Canadians. Twice as many American seniors with below-median incomes self-report "excellent" health compared to Canadian seniors (11.7 percent versus 5.8 percent). Conversely, white Canadian young adults with below-median incomes are 20 percent more likely than lower income Americans to describe their health as "fair or poor."[5]

Fact No. 6: Americans spend less time waiting for care than patients in Canada and the U.K. Canadian and British patients wait about twice as long - sometimes more than a year - to see a specialist, to have elective surgery like hip replacements or to get radiation treatment for cancer.[6] All told, 827,429 people are waiting for some type of procedure in Canada.[7] In England, nearly 1.8 million people are waiting for a hospital admission or outpatient treatment.[8]

Fact No. 7: People in countries with more government control of health care are highly dissatisfied and believe reform is needed. More than 70 percent of German, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and British adults say their health system needs either "fundamental change" or "complete rebuilding."[9]

Fact No. 8: Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians. When asked about their own health care instead of the "health care system," more than half of Americans (51.3 percent) are very satisfied with their health care services, compared to only 41.5 percent of Canadians; a lower proportion of Americans are dissatisfied (6.8 percent) than Canadians (8.5 percent).[10]

Fact No. 9: Americans have much better access to important new technologies like medical imaging than patients in Canada or the U.K. Maligned as a waste by economists and policymakers naïve to actual medical practice, an overwhelming majority of leading American physicians identified computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the most important medical innovations for improving patient care during the previous decade.[11] [See the table.] The United States has 34 CT scanners per million Americans, compared to 12 in Canada and eight in Britain. The United States has nearly 27 MRI machines per million compared to about 6 per million in Canada and Britain.[12]

Fact No. 10: Americans are responsible for the vast majority of all health care innovations.[13] The top five U.S. hospitals conduct more clinical trials than all the hospitals in any other single developed country.[14] Since the mid-1970s, the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology has gone to American residents more often than recipients from all other countries combined.[15] In only five of the past 34 years did a scientist living in America not win or share in the prize. Most important recent medical innovations were developed in the United States.[16] [See the table.]

Conclusion. Despite serious challenges, such as escalating costs and the uninsured, the U.S. health care system compares favorably to those in other developed countries.

  1. Fact Check:

The leading cause of death and injury in the US is our health care system.

Americans pay 3 times the world average for healthcare.

The US is ranked lowest for quality care in the industrialized world.

More Americans go overseas for health care than foreigners come here. Simply google "Medical Tourism" Well over 1 MILLION Americans get their health care out of country and that number is growing in leaps and bounds.

A disease that has been eradicated in the last 40 years.

US Hospital Acquired Infections are the highest in the world.

US Doctors are the highest paid in the world.

  2. Robert Harrold you are Foxing the facts. It is not possible to vote twice in your silly push poll by clearing the browser. I figured it could not be done but I tried anyway in case you might be telling the truth. When you clear the privacy in the browser and vote it says, "cannot process request" Google Blogger is set up so that only one person can vote one time. This is not Florida in the year 2000.

I found your site on a political forum and I came over to see for myself. I am a conservative and part of me resents your little parody of the far right fringe but I also think site like this show just how splintered the GOP is becoming as thoughtful conservatives like George Will and Pat Buchannon are silenced and the crazies like Palin and Beck get all the attention.

I do think you should mention this is a parody site.

    Reality check.

French MDs make less than 100K in salaries and France has the best medcial care in the world. US MDs make 190+ in salaries alone and the US has the WORST medical care in the world.

  4. Dear Anonymous (1 or all)

    1st:
If you read my original comment about multiple voting, note that I said "clear cookies."
All the voting block does is place a cookie in your PC that notes whether you've voted in the past. Clear your cookies be it in IE, Chrome, Opera, Firefox or Opera. I don't use many other browsers e.g. Safari.

    2nd:
I agree with most of what factcheck.org says; but, if you for example consider my blog postings contrary to your positions on issues such as abortion versus life, 2nd Amendment, and the marxist socialist bent by the W.H. so be it. I don't always agree with statistics unless they have some citations that can be 'fact checked.' In the case of most of what you've referred to, I would agree ... with the exception of accepting euphamisms such as "crazies", "start telling the whole truth", "WORST", etc.

My site is, I admit, when taken as a whole is a parody of sorts, that the GOP is splintered (in proportion to the Dems losing favor.) Of course, you and I will join together in November and we can come back to some of these discussions and revisit them in light of the election results.

    3rd:
George Will and Pat Buchannon have not be ignored by me. Use the search box at the top right and you'll find they're scattered amongst the entries. I frequently cited George Will on my Pro-Life page at http://www.773.com Like most bloggers, pundits, "news" shows ..I more often than not choose to post articles or commentary that favors my positions on issues.

    4th:
I don't accept that France has the best medical care in the world, though when I was in France a couple time and needed care, the care I got was superb!

    The whole truth rarely is.

Thank you for giving readers more facts and references.

  5. OBTW, I don't deny that Fox News is my favorite new channel. I do, as most of his 'haters' could benefit from, watch and learn a lot that an ordinary citizen doesn't have the resources to learn on their own. It's to bad that most of his detractors, or those that fear the information, like Keith Olbermann couldn't ..when they attack Beck.. use some "facts" like you have when trying to offset someones arguments on an issue.

(Apr11)   In 8 years, President Bush added $5 trillion to the national debt; President Obama, according to a revised Dec11 GAO report, added $4T+ to the U.S. deficit in 2011 alone!  The GAO estimates the deficit, including o'scamcare & mandates, may grow from $15T+ to over $26T+!  UPDATE: A little-noticed event occurred at approximately midnight on Monday, October 31, 2011.  The National Debt exceeded the GDP!  Imagine what these numbers are going to be now that Obama is reelected! A trillion seconds pass in 31,688 years.  At $1/sec it would take 41,194 years just to pay off o'tax'n spend's new Feb12-Feb13 added debt - 538,696 years to pay only the national debt or 4,404,632 years to settle the debt+unfunded liabilities!

"Over the last four years our national debt has risen nearly $6 trillion, and just last week the debt topped an astounding $16 trillion.  To put that in perspective, $16 trillion is enough money to fund the US military, along with the military of every NATO country combined… for the next sixteen years!  Government spending is projected to hit $3.8 trillion this year alone.  Even after every tax dollar paid by Americans has been counted, the government will still overspend by another $1.13 trillion.  Every single second of the day our government spends over $12,000.  So in the time it takes you to read this article, roughly five minutes, our government has spent $3.6 million.  It take four seconds for the government to spend what the average American earns in an entire year."  (source: by Tim Phillips 17Sep12 at TownHall.com)
"Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself.  They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence … From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable . . . the very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference – they deserve a place of honor with all that is good." -- George Washington

Thousands of Deadly Islamic Terror Attacks Since 9/11
It has been suggested that o'who?, the clown, and 'those who surround him' are not the bumbling fools they appear to be.  Nor are they one of the 'Three Stooges' but rather are shrewd implementation/drivers and fellow-travelers of policies designed to disarm the citizenry & collapse the American economy.  Why?  o'nocchio's grandiose scheme to "fundamentally transform America" is more than simple campaign rhetoric as can be seen by his use of "enabling acts" to circumvent the Constitution of the United States.  As Ollie used to say, "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into."

"As a nation we have been asleep for years.  Lulled by affluence and self-indulgent apathy, our collective awareness has grown dim.  This has created an opening for our enemies, one that may ultimately prove fatal.  This is the truth and what we do, or don't do, will determine the consequences, for better or worse.  It is time to decide." -- truthandcons.blogspot.com

Judica me, Deus, et discerne causam meam de gente non sancta, ab homine iniquo et doloso erue me.
Do me justice, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; rescue me from the deceitful and unjust man.
